college!au. seohyun has it all figured it out. except for the fact that it doesn't need to be.

Seohyun has it all figured out.

She's going to graduate on the top of her international studies class, with honours, before leaving for an internship at some giant Japanese conglomerate. She's going to spend two years there, perfecting her language and diplomatic skills - maybe have a couple dates with some cute Japanese guys, but she'll be far too focused on her career to be in a serious relationship - before finally getting her break into the UN.

Seohyun can see the rest of her life, mapped out on the margins of her textbooks and in between the lines of her notes.

It's a straight and narrow path, and she doesn't plan to divert from it. It's her dream, and she won't let anyone distract her from it. She's so driven and focused that she rarely lets herself go, her social life of consisting of phone calls to her parents and a drink once a week with her roommates.

"Don't even think about going back to the dorms before it's 2am." Tiffany, a history major and Seohyun's designated "fun enforcer", warns her quite seriously, waggling her brightly-painted fingers at Seohyun's grimace.

Yoona nods in agreement, pushing a beer into Seohyun's hands.

"I hate to say this, but Tiffany's right. You need this. Without us, you'd be reading your textbooks for the sixth time. On a Friday night. This is college - you're entitled to have fun." she explains calmly.

Seohyun blinks at the beverage in her hand.

"But I do have fun," she says slowly. "I have heaps of fun. I like learning and studying and knowing that my future won't be threatened by a hazy night of debauchery."

Tiffany rolls her eyes.

"Just drink the beer, Seororo. And be on the lookout for cute boys. Just because you disapprove of debauchery doesn't mean we all do. Some of us want to get laid tonight."

Yoona pats her arm comfortingly.

"At least listen to the music here. They have great live bands."

As if on cue, a group of four guys appear on stage, guitars and drumsticks in hand. They look nervous and a little awkward, but the long-haired guy attempts to smile winningly at the audience.

They set up their instruments without fuss, before the lead singer (not extraordinary looking, but his overbite and the way his brown hair falls in front of his eyes are endearing) taps the microphone.

It crackles, sending a high-pitched screech throughout the entire bar, causing most people to turn around and glare.

He makes an apologetic gesture, before clearing his throat.

"Uh - hi. We're - we're Code Name Azzurro. But you can call us C.N. Blue." he titters, obviously thinking he was hilarious. The drummer with the dimples behind him slaps a palm to his face.

Tiffany rolls her eyes.

"Great. They always shove the shitty bands on first - I think it's a ploy to get people to drink more," she makes her point by taking a sip of her beer. "Though, these guys are pretty cute"

She flashes her trademark smile at the brooding guitarist, complete with crescent moon eyes and pearly white teeth, but he looks unfazed. Yoona snorts. Seohyun blinks slowly. The lead singer is still speaking.

"-so I hope you guys have fun listening to us. And feel free to talk to us afterwards! I like to think we're pretty cool guys." he beams toothily, and Seohyun has the inexplicable urge to tell him to go the dentist.

Or floss regularly.

She inwardly sighs and wonders how many more drinks she would have to ply her friends with before she could sneak back to their dorm without them noticing, before the sounds of a steady beat and a complicated guitar riff pierce the din of the bar.

Seohyun's eyes widen as the bumbling bunch of guys from a few moments earlier turn into a charismatic, downright sexy group of men.

The drummer is smiling, dimpling and twirling his drumsticks. The long-haired bassist smirks with confidence and flicks his hair back and forth. Even the unsmiling guitarist is alight with passion.

But it's the lead singer that has Seohyun captivated.

His dark eyes are dark and heavy-lidded, smouldering and promising sinful things Seohyun's probably never heard of (or read about). His lips curve into a wicked smirk, and Seohyun flushes when his tongue darts out of the corner of his mouth.

His voice is beautiful, smooth and velvety. He is confident and suave and knows exactly how to engage the audience (a wink here, a toss of his hair there, and oh, that smile) and the words that come out of his mouth make her shiver with anticipation.

"Looks like our Seohyun has found her man for her night. Or year." Tiffany snickers.

Seohyun barely registers her friends' conversation (about her) as she stares almost unblinkingly in awe at the band. When they end their set, she is the first one on her feet, clapping enthusiastically. Yoona raises an eyebrow.

"Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen you so excited," she deadpans. "Apart from getting new textbooks."

Seohyun coughs delicately, sitting back down. She fiddles with the hem of her blouse, blushing.  She bites her lip, checking her watch. It's still early, her essay is due in two weeks (and she's nearly finished anyway), and all she has left on her weekly to-do list is to call her parents. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if she were to let go and have fun night out (by her friend's standards), right? And not to mention the lead singer is the only guy so far to have piqued her interest during well, her life.

Right.

"So - um - you know - how exactly do you - well -" she stutters, before Tiffany raises a hand to stop her.

"Relax, Seobaby," she grins a little wickedly, and Seohyun is starting to regret her decision already. "Unnie will teach you how to seduce a man the right way."

Yoona spits out her drink.

After a ten-minute frenzied makeover session in the bar's toilets ("I never thought this day would come, but I always prepared for it!"), Seohyun stumbles out in a tight black dress, flowing, wavy hair and bright red lipstick.

"Are you sure I don't look like a whore?" she whispers again to Yoona, the only one with sound judgment tonight.

Yoona shrugs.

"You do. But I think your usual conservative, frigid self allows you to have a pretty large slut quota to fill."

She is also the only one that's brutally honest. Seohyun cringes as she tugs at the hem of her short dress. Tiffany walks out of the toilets just in time to slap her hand away.

"You look hot - don't ruin it by thinking you don't," she chides almost motherly, before primping her hair. "First rule of seduction: always be confident, even if you aren't"

Seohyun makes a face.

"Can you not call it that, unnie? It makes it sound like I want to sleep with him"

"Don't you?"

"NO!" Seohyun just about screeches, before mumbling. "I just...want to talk to him."

"Well then, let's go 'talk', shall we?" Tiffany chirps, before linking arms with her and Yoona and dragging them towards the band hanging out by the bar.

Seohyun keeps her eyes down as Tiffany works her magic, charming and giggling in all the right places. Yoona doesn't even have to try - she simply smiles before the drummer and the bassist trip over themselves trying to buy her a drink.

She wants to start talking, socialising - being - but everything about this isn't her. The dress, the make-up, the giggly, flirty attitude - Seohyun shies away from these things because she's honestly more comfortable in jeans and her hair pulled back in a ponytail, and a no-nonsense approach to life.

She'0s starting to really regret this impulsive decision (having fun seemed like a good idea in theory, but one had to actually know how to have fun before attempting it) and is trying to figure out how to escape this awkward (on her part) situation unnoticed before a low, throaty chuckle rumbles from her left.

"Wow, you look as uncomfortable as I feel."

There's a friendly, toothy smile and for a moment, Seohyun can't breathe. The lead singer is back to the amicable, slightly bumbling version of himself from before. He flashes her another grin, before gesturing vaguely with the beer in his hand.

"Do you come here often?" he asks, furrowing his brows. "Because - no offence - you don't look like the type that goes out at all."

Seohyun laughs a little behind her hand, ducking her head.

"Um - well - yeah. I don't really go out much," Seohyun is suddenly self-conscious of the way she looks and how it really isn't her. "I guess I just thought - maybe - I could've - this could've been the night that I did, you know?"

He nods understandingly.

"I get it. You don't want people to think that you're only this when you could be all that, right?" he says sympathetically, before chuckling self-deprecatingly. "Well, we just jumped a couple social conventions right there. Before we delve into any more deeply profound and meaningful subjects, I'm Yonghwa."

He sticks his hand out, and Seohyun wants to laugh because only moments ago she was completely star-struck by a boy who really isn't all that different from her after all.

(The fact that he isn't makes a shiver run down her spine.)

She takes his hand, ignoring the wink that Tiffany sends her way.

"I'm Seohyun."

They end up talking for hours, about friends (he knows a couple people she knows, but not enough to make it weird), family (he's from Busan, which explains the funny accent he slips into a couple times when he's excited) and their futures (he's a music major and his songs have already been bought by small entertainment companies).

Yonghwa is laidback and easygoing, chuckling at her stories (or lack of) about staying up 3am to finish her projects to find out they were due the following week. Yonghwa is talented, songwriting and DJ-ing and acting all up his alley. Yonghwa is funny, cracking jokes throughout the night and more than five of them have made her laugh.

And at three in the morning and four beers later, Yonghwa is really, really cute.

"Somehow it seems like you're up way past your bedtime." he teases, taking in the sight of her flushed cheeks and glazed eyes.

Seohyun scrunches her up her face in a way she knows is unattractive.

"I promised my unnies I wouldn't get back to the dorms until 2am," she says slowly, making sure she doesn't trip over her words. "And look! It's nearly three-thirty in the morning! I'm even more rebellious than I thought."

Yonghwa laughs, and Seohyun decides she likes the sound.

"You're a funny girl, Seohyun," he catches her elbow as she nearly tips over her stool. "I don't know why you're trying to change that."

Seohyun blinks up at him.

"What do you mean?" she asks softly, leaning against his touch.

Yonghwa doesn't move, simply looks at her like he's trying to figure out the code to the safe in her head (it unlocks her heart so she doesn't let anyone near it).

"You're kind of amazing the way you are. You don't need to change into something you're not just to prove that," he flashes her a teasing smile that may or may not make her heart stutter. "Though not amazing enough to walk properly."

Seohyun pulls away from his fingertips like she had been burnt. There's a tightness in her chest that she associates to nervousness - the kind of nervousness where she knows she's aced the test and can't wait to get back the results, the good kind of nervousness - and it's kind of scaring her that Yonghwa is making her feel this way.

"I - I have to go," she stammers, quickly gathering her things before backing away. "I - I have to get back to the dorms - my unnies must be worried - I -"

"Hey - "

Yonghwa reaches out to touch her but Seohyun flinches away, visibly shaken. His eyes flash hurt, not understanding the sudden change in her behaviour.

"I have to go," she repeats, harder and more determined. "I have to go back to my dorm and go to sleep because I get up at seven-thirty everyday to run 4.5 miles. Then I eat breakfast and call my parents for our weekly conference call. Then I'll start my assignment because I need to get honours in international studies because after that I'm going to be interning in Japan before working in the UN. If I deviate from any of this, the rest of it won't work. So if I stay out any later with you, if I get to know you any better, if I like you, it'll ruin my life."

Seohyun is breathing hard by the time she finishes her rant. Yonghwa stares at her unblinkingly, before laughing. Like, full-blown guffawing, pointing at her face, clutching his stomach - laughing.

Seohyun huffs a little, offended because she's just described her life plan to this stranger (this cute, amazing, wonderful stranger) and they don't even care. She turns to leave when Yonghwa calls out to her.

"What about everything in between?"

Seohyun stops in her tracks. Yonghwa has this little smug half-smile on his face that shouldn't make the butterflies in her stomach flutter.

"What about the moments in between? Are you going to plan out that too? What about the mornings or afternoons or nights that have nothing to do with your life plan? Is there going to be a schedule for those too?" he fires at her, raising an eyebrow.

Seohyun gapes, but she doesn't answer. She can't answer.

Yonghwa chuckles, stepping close enough for Seohyun to make out his eyelashes.

"You don't need a plan, Seohyun. You already know where you're going. Even I know where you're going. So -" he brushes her cheeks with the pads of his calloused thumbs, and she sucks in a breath. "- it doesn't really matter how you get there"

And then it hits her, what everyone around her has been trying to tell her. That it's okay to let go, that's it's okay to have fun - because her life is still going to be there even after a night she can't remember.

Seohyun looks up at Yonghwa with a newfound light in her eyes. There's a smile that stretches across her face that's different, genuine, carefree - and just as beautiful.

"Yeah," she breathes. "It really doesn't."

Seohyun doesn't change. Not really, anyway.

She still gets up at seven thirty everyday to run, still does her assignment three weeks early, still calls her parents every week.

But it's the things in between that are different.

She spontaneously shows up to Yonghwa's band practices, bearing drinks and snacks. She joins a church choir. She signs up for dance classes. She goes on a road trip with Yonghwa and drinks her body weight worth of soju and eats so many sweet potatoes she actually swore off of them for a month.

She lets Yonghwa kiss her in the middle of campus in between classes, giggling whenever he tries to dip her backwards.

She hasn't calculated future possible obstacles or projected relationships onto graphs for any of these, but Seohyun figures that it was part of the plan all along to have fun along the way.

(But there's one thing Seohyun knows.

If Yonghwa doesn't propose after their two-year trip to Japan - he's been contacted by Japanese entertainment companies - she's going to take matter into her own hands.

After all, marriage was always part of her long-term plan.)
