The worst part of dying he'd discovered was the finality: A split second twitch of electrons, racing along a maze of neuropathic pathways and sparking an avalanche of memories and unknown possibilities.  In that fleeting passage of time he'd learned to expect the unexpected.

He no longer questioned or worried if this was to be his last breath, and he'd come to accept the anomaly as another constant in the universe, though he secretly wished it would end.

Yet those few words had pierced his heart quicker than the sharpest of blades and left him tumbling into a limitless pool of loss.

You are wrong.

He wanted to laugh, to cry, to scream at the injustice.  He'd stood as the last man, the final barrier between the Doctor and the Daleks, and had willingly sacrificed himself.  He'd witnessed the laser beam, and for that one infinitesimal second of time he'd seen all that had been, and all that could have been in his life, and carried no regrets.

Air trapped in his lungs, unable to breathe, his screams turned to silent terror as the world evaporated and faded to nothing.  Moments later, searing pain coursed through his body and jerked him awake.  He gasped for air as blood thundered through his brain setting nerve endings on fire even as he defied the darkness.

Death had greeted him, encompassed him then vanished, leaving him alone and empty as he watched his world disintegrate around him.

Suicide, murders, killings, it hardly mattered anymore.  He couldn't die, at least not permanently.  He'd suffered pain at each attempt, experienced fear and he'd finally given up trying, until now.

No one asked him to step forward this time, but then again, no one had to.  This was Jack, and the man to whom he would willingly give every life he possessed, the man that had once walked away and abandoned him, yet still chose to stand beside him and accept what he'd become.

There was no hesitation or second thoughts as Jack threw himself forward and watched as the laser beam streaked towards him.

Maybe it would buy the Doctor that little extra bit of time needed to save them all, and just maybe he'd realize, Jack wasn't wrong after all.
