Given that there's so much praise for Windows 7 (because of real performance), I think I'll skip Vista SP1 (man, they'll be coasters in the near future hahahaha!) and instead pick up Win7 Ultimate.
And in the grand tradition of XP, and considering that my favorite online game can work in Win7 with a little tweak of Gameguard without being nagged by the UAC or a bunch of ridiculous "security" safeguards as in the case of "temperamental" Vista, for the Japanophiles I know best I recommend that they can pick up the now-official Nanami Madobe theme in this place:
http://blog.jap-on.com/2009/10/windows-7-official-nanami-mizuki-and-os-tan-theme/ Or if in case that disappears, go use Google: type in nanami madobe windows 7 theme.
And I did a smaller, 350x150 version of the banner for use as a sig:
In my case, I'll see what I could do with a single-core 2.0Ghz laptop with 512mb of SODIMM PC-100 memory. Maybe there's some 1GB modules somewhere.
And oh, by the way, after I told him we could just replace the failed GPU fan on the 7200GS/256mb video card of his PC for just a few hundred pesos (or about $2), Henry VIII decided to buy a new 8400GS/512mb instead.
I'll keep this card for now. Maybe I'll use that and some bunch of leftover parts to build my own machine.
