For those of you who are familiar with the Macintosh hardwares... I have the opportunity to buy a mac desktop that has been decommissioned by my company. The computers they sell are "refurbished", you can get a warranty for them, and they clean them up pretty nice ( Read more... )

I think that's a decent deal. As long as you don't mind going to jerk off or get a drink while it's rendering your video, you should have something that you'll be able to play around with and learn the software.

See, we could even look at the extra jerk-off time as a value add. Playing around and learning the package outside of a pressurized environment is exactly what I want.

Thanks!

That is the exact desktop computer that I just replaced with a 2.2ghz laptop. (I had the computer for four years.) I loved my computer, and would not have replaced it, but it could not use some of the newer programs (such as iLife 08), and the new Mac operating system is incompatible with the computer.

I have no idea how much Final Cut costs--is that included, or do you have your own copy? Depending on the cost for it, you might be making a deal just to get that program.

Bobo would be a better judge than me on whether it overall is a good deal.

I soooo would not do this. So you can't drop 3000 bucks...how about 2000? Have you looked at the refurbished modern computers on Apple's website? I know it's tempting, but this computer is not going to run worth a shit with Leopard...it's not a great Tiger experience either. Don't.

Dude, there's a refurbished 20" iMac up there, 2.0GHz Core2Duo, for 1049 plus tax. Get some 3rd party ram from Newer or somewhere and bump that 1GB up to 2GB and you are all set.

If you want to buy one that has been taken care of and has 1.75 GB RAM (I think), you could always buy bear's old one. I was going to sell it on Craigslist or on eBay, but if you want to throw $400 my way I'll even throw in the Apple studio display.
