Namatame couldn't see how he could change for the worse anymore with all that he'd done in the past--short of things like actually committing murder, anyway, though he knew he'd come frighteningly close a few weeks ago (and the part he didn't dwell on was the fact that he had almost died then too). He was more or less at rock bottom, so he could either stay where he was now or start working his way back up.

"When you put it that way, in my case that change will most likely be for the better. No matter what's going to happen. Not to say that it'll be the case for everybody." He looked behind him at the party going on inside, still going strong while the two of them were talking. There were so many people gathered here, but they were all in the same war. It was going to be hard on a lot of them, including Namatame himself. He hadn't even seen the fighting yet and he was already worried, especially seeing how young some were here. "I suppose it's too much to ask that you could save everyone from having to go through this kind of violence again, but it's always nice to dream."

He hoped everybody enjoyed the party while they could. A little happiness in life never hurt, even if hardship followed it on its heels.

Yoko really didn't mean people who turn evil. But then again who was she to know what each person will do? She followed his eyes to the life of the party behind the closed glass doors. It did look like everyone was having fun. Yoko smiled. It was good to let loose for awhile, especially with what was to come.

"I agree, some of us will grow from this while others may...want to join other sides," She replied as she patted her gown to get rid of the imaginary dust.

"No one is perfect, especially now..we're all just simple people," Yoko explained," shibusen took away all of our powers, weapons, anything that made us remotely powerful..which might be best for us so we can learn their ways and gain strength from that."

Yoko smiled gently," I wish we could avoid the violence somehow..especially when we have such young children fighting in this war too," She looked back out, closing her eyes. The night air felt wonderful on her. Though she would prefer to be out of the strapless gown and be able to let her hair out of its bun and dressed more comfortably. She finally spoke up again," you know...back in my old world when I finally was able to settle down--I wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to teach children the wonders of life and to appreciate being able to live in a peaceful world...they didn't need to see the ugliness of war or anything like that just yet."

So their powers had been stripped? That seemed strange, but the way she reasoned it made sense--it would have been tempting to fall back on the familiar, and Namatame knew that if he'd had any powers he actually wanted to use, he would have tried to use them instead. (His ability to go through the TV didn't count, because even if he still had it there was no way he would ever use it again given the choice. If that power was gone, then he was glad.)

He listened further, trying to imagine the life the woman was talking about. A peaceful world, without war...it sounded good, like the dream he'd had for the future as a kid. It had never worked out, of course, but the idea was still something he could appreciate over a decade later. And for her--she'd seen a lot of fighting, and to try and show the children peace after what she must have been through was something he could easily admire. "That sounds like a wonderful idea. I hope you'll be able to do that after all this is over."

Yoko smiled gently," I was able to be a teacher for a little while...but then I appeared here," She gripped the railing and lowered her eyes," I miss each and every one of them...but I would not want anything to go wrong and they appear here or this war effects our own worlds..."

She placed her chin on the palm of her hand, looking over at Namatame," So tell me Namatame, are you one for parties?"

Namatame shook his head, and he felt good enough to laugh a little bit. "Not very much. My ex-wife was always more comfortable in these types of situations than I was. Not only that, but I don't know if I have the energy to get involved in the celebrations right now." It was true; he'd just been released from the hospital when he found himself in Death City, and while Namatame was in better condition than he'd been in before he didn't quite feel up to any real dancing. He wasn't sure how being in that other world had taken such a toll on him, but it had.

He looked back at the party a second time and was reminded of Mayumi again--the way she'd lit up his life, the shock of her murder, and the relief he'd felt at finding that her killer had been stopped, even here in another world. "Honestly, I wasn't even sure I should come here tonight, but...I have my own reasons for being here, aside from the announcements I hear are promised."

She blinked," You were married before?".Yoko continued to listen to him though the thought of people being married before coming here left her feeling rather nostalgic. She closed her eyes, enjoying the cool breeze," I'm the same way...I was never the type of come to parties..I rather have a good book and sit someone quiet or go outside."

"Thats fine, everyone has their reasons.."Yoko waved her hand," I wonder what news they have."

"I hope it's something more pleasant than what's been happening, because everybody here could certainly use it." Namatame smiled, but as he continued it didn't last. "But knowing the nature of our stay here, it won't be. We're not here to have fun, as much as people are enjoying themselves now. It could be a small announcement or it could be a large one, but I have a feeling there are some who won't like what we're going to hear tonight.

"Of course," he added, "it's not often that such things please everybody regardless of whatever the subject is." He shook his head. "Even believing that, I'd prefer not to dwell on it until the time comes."

Yoko nodded her head," Its just the dark side of war..."

She smiled warmly at him," but we'll have more moments like these I think. More pleasant times to be able to escape from our real reasoning for being here."
