Characters: Kanda, Heine's shadow, Heine, Kanda's shadow.
Location: Somewhere out in the fog, towards the east side of the city.
Rating: R for violence, blood, guro gore, language, sexual themes.
Time: July 18, afternoon, after Kanda's shadow sets fire to the church and right around the time Heine's shadow first turns up.
Description: Kanda goes after his shadow but runs into Heine's instead.

Contrary to what his shadow had said, Kanda was indeed going to it. He had seen the thing on the DEMISE--watched what it did, heard what it said, saw who it said it to. He hadn't stuck around long enough to listen in.

There was a thing out there with his body and his face and it was telling people all of that crap as though it was him. Kanda didn't give a fuck what it was. He wasn't bothering to think about its similarities with the shadows of others he had seen and spoken to.

In his mind there was only one thing that mattered: shutting it up.

He didn't go to his partner for this. He didn't want Heine involved. This was between him and that thing out there parroting his voice.

He took with him only two things: the heavy wooden suburito and the pair of glasses that he'd procured from the bear after requesting them from that girl on the network. He knew where the church was, and even from this far across the city, as he stepped outside he could still catch a whiff of smoke in the air from the distant building as it burned.

Cutting through side streets and checking his GPS to keep clear on his track, he headed due east. He felt queasy and a sheen of cool sweat prickled over his skin, but adrenalin kept him going despite the fog--either that or the time he'd spent out in it during the search for Nill had allowed his body to adapt somewhat. Either way he didn't pause to contemplate the matter.

He'd just passed the parking lot of one of those damn ubiquitous coffee shops and turned down a side street to cut south-east when his foot came down in something sticky and wet--a red congealing puddle. And simultaneously an acrid metallic tang on the air.

His hackles immediately rising, his fingers closed around the hilt of his weapon as he looked down into the face of what once had been a man. It's throat had been ripped, as though by some animal, and it's entire bottom jaw was gone so that its nose and exposed upper teeth protruded, looking almost beak-like.

Kanda's first thought was Adachi and he readied the suburito reflexively, reaching out with his senses to find the predator he was sure must be lurking near by.

There was a figure there, just ahead in the fog, someone walking towards him. They were soaked in blood. But it wasn't Adachi.
