((What it says on the tin. I will make a note when I'm done with the comment chain, but for now, feel free to tag the already existing threads.

For our logging convenience, her story telling will be divided into a total of 5 or 6 comments.))

Before I tell you the stories of my companions, I must begin with my own. I assure you, however, that I do not do so out of a desire to exhibit my role or to appear more important than what I actually was: I will do so because it will help you understand how this story began.

[Slowly but surely, Dolorosa begins her tale, speaking in a calm and gentle tone of voice.]

There isn't much to say about my own existence before I found that crater so many sweeps ago. I do believe my first sweeps were very similar to Kanaya's, for my lusus was also a virgin mother grub. [At this, she smiles at her descendant before continuing.] We lived in the desert until the day she passed, when I was deemed ready to take her matriorb and return to the brooding caverns, to hatch the new mother grub while tending to the one who was still alive ( ... )

[Nepeta did not know much about mother grubs, now that she thought about it. Oh sure, she knew they all came from one, and that one was necessary for reproduction but she still didn't understand exactly how the whole process worked, and how exactly trolls were connected to the mother and where it came from. A part of her was curious, but talk about an embarrassing topic. Not to mention troll reproduction wasn't exactly the point of this get together so she decided to save the question for some later point. Instead she asked the other thing she was curious about]

Were there a lot of other trolls down there to help you? Jade blood is really rare, isn't it?

[Dolorosa pauses for a moment to sip at her cup of tea.]

I did not think anything would change throughout my lifespan until the night I found him. While on an errand, I realized that there had been some sort of impact, for I stumbled upon what appeared to be a crater in a path I was very familiar with. I hadn't heard or sensed any disturbance from deep within the brooding caverns, but given the direction and depth of the tunnels and the geological nature of their structure, such a thing was only to be expected. What I found in that crater, however... was not.

At the very center of the crater's dip, I found a grub. A bright red grub, unlike any other grub I had ever seen during my time in the caverns. At first I thought that a troll or beast had managed to steal him and other eggs, but I realized there were no fragments of a shell anywhere nearby, and that the grub did not originate from the caverns.

[Her voice becomes even softer, and the affection she feels for that grub is quite clear.]I recognized him as special, but if you ask ( ... )

[Karkat is silent for awhile, listening. trolls never get to hear origin stories or learn about their ancestors. maybe hearing the story of the only other freak troll Alternia ever saw will fill in some of the blanks.]

So wait, there really wasn't anything for him? A symbol, or a lusus, anything?

[She shakes her head 'no', turning her attention to Karkat.]

No, there was not. Each class has a very diverse alphabet of signs, which are specific to that class. However, his caste was unique and exclusive to him, so he he had nothing waiting for him in the brooding caverns.

[Nothing except culling, that is.]

Well, yeah, but...

[he doesn't really have a followup to that. he knew he was the only freakblood, but he'd still held out hope that having a lusus and a sign meant he had a caste too.]

He was five sweeps old when he first spoke to me about his dreams, but whether they began at that age or much before, I do not know. As the sweeps passed, his visions became more frequent and vivid, until the intensity of the images assaulting his thinkpan was enough to wake him from his slumber in a state of distress ( ... )
