Before I tell you the stories of my companions, I must begin with my own. I assure you, however, that I do not do so out of a desire to exhibit my role or to appear more important than what I actually was: I will do so because it will help you understand how this story began.

[Slowly but surely, Dolorosa begins her tale, speaking in a calm and gentle tone of voice.]

There isn't much to say about my own existence before I found that crater so many sweeps ago. I do believe my first sweeps were very similar to Kanaya's, for my lusus was also a virgin mother grub. [At this, she smiles at her descendant before continuing.] We lived in the desert until the day she passed, when I was deemed ready to take her matriorb and return to the brooding caverns, to hatch the new mother grub while tending to the one who was still alive.

I was one of her caretakers. Most trolls do not understand the toll it takes on her body to spawn our race, and how every brood makes her weaker, more fragile, and in need of more assistance than before. I aided in her recovery and helped soothe her, to lessen the burden of laying thousands upon thousands of eggs. Most of my time was spent in the brooding caverns, but I was allowed to leave the inner tunnels to do whatever errand was necessary, although I was still forbidden from visiting the surface.

I did not mind my tasks, because what I did was important. Every troll has a job to do and that was my own: to aid the Mother Grub in her brooding process and ensure that our race would thrive. I protected not only her but also her eggs, so that each of them would have the same chances of survival until they pupated; from there on, I could not interfere. Every wiggler must prove his or her worth in order to rise to the surface, without any positive or negative influence from trolls, beasts or drones. I was ready to sacrifice my existence to protect the Mother Grub and her progeny, should it come to that, and I do not regret a single drop of jade blood shed during numerous skirmishes with beasts and murderous trolls alike.

[Nepeta did not know much about mother grubs, now that she thought about it. Oh sure, she knew they all came from one, and that one was necessary for reproduction but she still didn't understand exactly how the whole process worked, and how exactly trolls were connected to the mother and where it came from. A part of her was curious, but talk about an embarrassing topic. Not to mention troll reproduction wasn't exactly the point of this get together so she decided to save the question for some later point. Instead she asked the other thing she was curious about]

Were there a lot of other trolls down there to help you? Jade blood is really rare, isn't it?
