My newest pet-peeve

While I'm at it, I will also protest the word pet-peeve, but I don't really know what to replace it with in English, so, if anyone has suggestions, know is the time to speak.

I hate it when people say "You're a (insert a word here). It doesn't mean what you think, go look it up!" Or something of that nature. First of all, if you are going to insult someone, it isn't a great idea to assume that they don't know a word. It makes you look like you just found out, and the the insultee, it might be completely obvious. Ouch. Humiliating.
Second, and probably most importantly. DON'T MAKE ME GO LOOK IT UP. Chances are I KNOW a couple of meanings. So, if it isn't what I think (and how the hell do you know that anyway?) maybe I will figure that the third meaning is what you were referring to, and maybe that's a compliment.

Bottom line: don't fuck with people's heads like that. If you are saying that I don't know what something means, EXPLAIN what you BELIEVE it means. Dammit.

Did I complain about something similar recently? About a teacher that said, "Oh, this word, 'importune' that Fitzgerald uses, he likes to do that, use words you wouldn't usually see. Anyone want to take a guess at what it means?"
At which I said, "Well, I know. It means 'annoying'." Sour look from the teacher. "With the connotation of interrupting."
And he said, "No, that's not what it means. You all go look it up."
AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH
Of course, I couldn't resist. I did look it up. And, yup, I was right.

And I still love this professor, who has taught me many wonderful things about writing this semester. He just couldn't resist "showing me my place."

Sorry if I repeated myself.
