[The amount of people being sent home recently made her wonder...]

Do people who are returned by BREW always forget everything that happened here when they go back?

I know people sometimes remember things when they’re brought back to this world, but if they aren’t...[She looks away for a moment.] ...if BREW doesn’t bring them back, do they really ( Read more... )

How could we know that if they don't come back to tell us.

...I guess, I just wanted to know if the memories we made here come back on their own after a while or not.

[A sigh.]

I probably should have worded it better.

I remembered.

But I came back.

But did you remember while you were gone? [Because his answer is...kind of vague.]

[Oh, it's this girl. The pleasant one who had given him clothing.]

I suppose the better question would be: Does it matter very much? I would hope, though, that people would forget about this place at going back.

It matters to me.

[And then more quietly.]

You think it would be better to forget all this?

My situation is different from yours. It would be more difficult for me to remember this only to die the minute I return home. [And he says this like it's nothing.]

[She winced a little. She hadn't meant to bring that up.]

Sorry.

[Still, in some way it wasn't all that different, was it? When she left this place she would be going back to wondering in the darkness. Would remembering make it harder to return to that place without light?]

I'm not sure, but it's really depressing to think about. I mean, if we do forget everything when we go back for good, then we'll forget everyone we met here.

...sorry. I didn't mean to upset anyone.

[She just...really didn't want to forget.]

[She shakes her head.]

No, it's okay. I mean, it's a good question to ask. I just wish I had a better answer.

I was hoping one of the people who had been sent back and returned might be able to give me an answer.

[This isn't something Mitsunari has placed any significant amount of thought into but it is a sobering thought. If he were to return tomorrow, would he remember the Saika's loyalty? Would he recall his time spent with the other world's Hideyoshi? Would the memory of speaking to a dragon still cling to his mind?]

...I do not have an answer for you. [He shakes his head a bit, still contemplating her question.] It is impossible to know the truth.

I guess not.

Still, I was hoping some of the people who'd gone back but returned might have some kind of answer.

If there is anything I have learned in my time here, it is that nothing remains certain. Whatever they may have experienced may not be the same as another, we cannot cite it as precedent.

Especially since, judging by the answers I have gotten, it seems like not everyone's experience is the same.

Perhaps our memories of experiences in this place are like all other memories, which fade with time.

Maybe.

It would still be better than forgetting everything all at once.

Indeed. I have learned much here that I do not wish to forget.

Maybe we won't. From the answers I'm getting, it sounds like not everyone does.
