now with more iron
so today was the day that i was going to go share the goodness of my life.
the last time i tried to give blood, the drop that they put in the copper sulphate solution to test for hemoglobin did not sink in the required 15 seconds. they sent me away and asked me to come back in 56 days.
this past week i tried really really hard to boost my iron levels. even eating spinach almost every day. lots of iron enriched multigrain bread. and cereal. and i kept my fingers crossed.
today my drop hovered in the middle of the bottle for a second or two and promptly dropped all the way down. ha! spinach, let me tell you.
i answered all their questions. and they let me continue on. (my behaviour isn't really high risk)
although i had diligently drank lots of water the night before and the morning of, the actual drawing out of my 550ml of blood took 13:23. 4 minutes longer than my last successful donation of 9 something, but my nurse was still happy.
they gave me cookies! and entered me in a contest to win a trip to disney world: be an every day hero. and. because it was my 3rd time, i got a #3 pin and a pen. also, a vitality // blood bracelet. but knowing that someday down the road i'll save 3 very special lives is worth infinitely more.
