i have always dreamed of a play or movie full of rich black characters ....a drama where race is never an ugly issue...atlast...the number one ladies' detective agency...
i have become a big fan ...
i don't know if it's going to make it for the long hall...
set in botswana it's packed with interesting faces, authentic beauty and long stretches of dusty road but it's too gentle, too family-oriented...there are no sharp elbows, not a dark force to speak of and the cases precious and her side-kick crack are all too easy and dull...there is something just plain OFF about the whole thing...limp even....
the show won't last i'm afraid...ofcourse, it does explore unhappy issues: lost children, kidapping, black magic, aids, infedelity, murder, theft, and poverty but does it in an oddly cheerful tone..there's no bite or grit...the morality is slower...the tension between characters peculiar...the jokes weak...

there was one episode, maybe the first, inwhich precious unravels the mystery of a man posing as young woman's (happy barbados) estranged father.

happy:
he is only pretending to be my father because i have money and a good job...i am afraid he is not the diddy!

precious:
not the diddy!? this is not good...this is very bad indeed!
------------------------

i couldn't help myself...i repeated that phrase for a week solid....

HE IS NOT THE DIDDY!!!!NOT THE DIDDY!!!

---------------------------------------

there something really appealing about philly girl jill scott and the character she plays, precious...a big woman with a gorgeous smile who happily brushes off coarse jibes about her weight with, "i'm a traditional build...many men like it that way..."
she is beautiful, smart, broke hearted, warm and foxy...her accent bubbles and bounces...i love her...and despite it's faults i love the show...but i worry that in the end it will go.
