Fall Is Falling

Football on television
I can hear the screaming fans from my room
"Interception! Touchdown!"
I'd go crazy if I was there, too.

I know the leaves are falling
Drifting to the ground
Where children step on them and crunch them
On their way home from school

I know the geese are flying
Honking like agitated road-raged drivers
Flying this way, that way
Avoiding the barrel of a shotgun

I know winter is coming
Slowly, but surely
I can feel winter's cold, dead hands
Ready to squeeze the colorful land

I know the skies will turn grey
And heavy, like a pregnant woman's belly
Not with child but with snow
How long until it falls?

I know it will be soon
When the leaves are all gone
White sheets will cover everything
And fall will have fallen
