Today Mom and I went to Wal-mart for some groceries, and we ended up in the yarn isle...we always do. We gravitate toward it. So Mom picked up this Lion Brand Homespun yarn, the soft fluffy kind, with a red and white mix, and was like, "Oh wow I really like that!" She picked up a shade of blue to knit a scarf for Mamaw (by request), and I decided to pick up the design she liked, and I'm making her a scarf.
Except...I've never worked with this yarn before, or a K hook. I'm used to F-G sized, which means this is a little bit of a double whammy: non-cotton yarn, and a larger size hook.
So I'm going about it with a different approach.
Normally with scarfs (what's the difference between scarfs and scarves anyway?) I do a chain of the entire length, the longest length, and then just double stich a few rows. Well chaining this stuff is a complete bitch, so I started with the small end. It may feel like it'll take longer, but I can't help that. Mom likes her scarfs long, like me, so I know I'm in for a long process. Maybe I'll have it ready in time for this fall. Hah. Like October.
Normally, I could whip out a scarf in a weekend, but with college, new yarn, new hook size, and new approach: I'm giving myself some room for error.
And since I started today, I'm giving myself a deadline: I'll have it ready for her to wear to church on October 2nd. That gives me 4 weeks, and since September is going to be a hellish month, I know I'll need every minute I can get. I plan on working on it for quite some time today, so I'll judge my timeframe based on where I am tonight.
In other news, I've got to come up with a birthday gift in 10 - er - 9 days. Conor's birthday is on the 13th, and I've got NOTHING. Mom and I decided to get a navy blue sweatshirt from Wal-Mart and paint on it with gold fabric paint (ETSU's colors are dark blue and gold) some sort of ETSU slogan. I kinda want one to. Because Friday, I went to the Culp Center at school and priced sweatshirts. I'm sorry, I can't afford a 60 dollar sweatshirt, even though he asked for one.
So far? That's all I got for the poor boy. :(
Totally sucks.
