Lanai is lovely. This island is unique. Not the lush tropical beauty of other islands, but it still is beautiful and Lanai City (not a city) seems like a time warp of old Hawaii.
Most of the island is uninhabited. There are only a handful of paved roads and a bunch of crazy dirt roads that you need FWD to navigate. I drove on one of these dirt roads for about an hour on the north coast and found a secluded beach. It was like out of a movie. Absolutely nobody there. From the beach I could see Lahaina/Kaanapali on Maui about 15 miles across a channel with all of its multi-storied resorts. It was strange lying on an isolated beach looking at it. I've been very lucky lately.
