When they announced Obama's victory I just burst into tears. This is an incredible shining moment of hope for the future, hope that I haven't felt in a long time. I really do love my country, its many gaping flaws and all.
I don't believe that things are going to be easy, and the amount of hatred that some people have both frightens and shames me. But I must say that John McCain's graciousness and sincerity in his concession speech did a lot to restore my damaged faith in him.
People who disagree with us are not inevitably our enemies. Yes, there are those who will always remain diametrically opposed to how we live our lives, but they are not the only kind of people who exist.
In the years ahead we'll need to work together as much as we possibly can in order to improve things. I don't know how well we'll do. We are human, after all - screwing things up royally is one of our biggest talents.
But now, just now, my heart is full of hope.
