The
full list and descriptions of titles coming out of DC relaunch have been announced over the past week. With a little more information than the
last time I wrote about the subject here are some quick, incomplete impressions.
5 Books I'm looking forward to
Batwoman: At least the huge delay makes sense now. Hoping it's worth the wait even without Greg Rucka.
Blue Beetle: Jaime!
Fury of Firestorm: Jason (and Ronnie)! Firestorm is a great character. I think Simone gets that.
Swamp Thing: Synder can bring the weird and the creepy.
Wonder Woman: The last time Azzarello and Chiang got together they mocked the powers that be at DC for rebooting the universe. I want front row seats in case it happens again.
4, er 5 Books I'll check out
Aquaman: Johns won me over with this character during Brightest Day.
Batgirl: If anyone can make the Oracle-to-Batgirl clusterfuck work it's Gail Simone.
Grifter: One word: CAFU. I don't even know what this book is about.
Static Shock: It's about time.
ETA Voodoo sounds like it could be awesome.
4 Books I'm definitely getting
Anything with the word "Lantern" in its title: Especially since they seem mostly immune to the changes.
3 Books I'm on the fence about
Batman: I love Synder's Detective Comics, but I think a lot of that is about my love of Dick Grayson as Batman.
Batwing: Judd Winnick writing an African? Watch for falling anvils.
Hawk and Dove: Pairing Sterling Gates and Rob Liefeld is like dating a gorgeous, witty, and kind person who constantly smells like a fart.
3 WTFs
I, Vampire: Not the book itself. If they manage to attract the skewed young and female Twihard/True Blood crowd, that's a good thing. Comic fandom needs more young people and more women. My question is where do the new young females fans go next in their DC comic reading life? Zatanna? Birds of Prey? Secret Six? Gone. Altered substantially. Gone and replaced with...we'll get to that in a sec. See
this excellent post for more on the state of the DC female character. Spoiler alert: it sucks.
ETA: Voodoo looks like a good choice. Let's get some more!
Suicide Squad: It's bad enough that John Ostrander, creator of the original series, and Gail Simone, writer of its spiritual successor, weren't asked to write this nor were they consulted. DC compounded the pain by
peeing on Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's excellent design for
Harley Quinn. Yes, the old Harley Quinn still exists, but why put the new one behind such an 8-ball as that outfit?
I've gone on enough, otherwise I'd rant about the silliness of putting comic book women in as few clothes as possible in the name of "sexiness." Old school Harley Quinn was covered head to toe and sexy as hell. Spandex is a hell of a thing.
Teen Titans: I'm totally judging a book by it's cover here but
LOOK AT IT. Good thing: An equal number of guys and girls, including two new (or maybe just redesigned like crazy) women. Bad thing: LOOK AT IT. It makes Liefeld look like Kirby.
LOOK AT IT.
3 people I can't believe won't have a job at DC while Dan Didio and Rob Liefeld do
Jamal Igle
Bryan Q. Miller
Nicola Scott
