A letter

Dear best friend,

I never thank you. I can’t properly thank you for all that you are in my life. You go with me everywhere, always supporting and leading me through the good and the bad.

When we first met, I never guessed. I went on a whim, a dream, and I came back with you. You were sad at first. You missed your old friends, but you soon got used to my way of life. The people in my home soon became your family-the woman who always had time to play with you, the man that babied you, and the younger woman that tried, fruitlessly to give you commands. And, there was of course me.

At first we had our difficulties. Sure. You and I weren’t quite as close then as we are now. There were some bumps in the road sometimes, but after all that, I was always grateful. I knew that every day, despite the happenings of yesterday, you would be ready to face another adventure with me.

Then we entered high school together. I’m very sorry I put you through that torture. The crowds, the long days, and yes, the gum on the floor all posed problems, but you stuck with me. In every class you were there. You stayed by my side, without complaining or protesting. Thank you for staying.
Not only did you stay, but you were the best companion a girl could have in her senior year of high school. When I failed my first math test of the year, I just held on to you and cried. You let me. You stayed, and you smiled in your way. When I was sick and had to stay home by myself, you wouldn’t get up without me. You wouldn’t leave my side. When I performed in recitals, you went on stage with me, giving me the best support a performer could want. In my year book pictures you are a part of the drama club, mock trial team, a cappella choir, honors society, link crew club, and so many others.

When I received my diploma you and I climbed the wobbly stairs. You were full of confidence, while I was shaking with fear and anticipation. At that moment, I knew that we both had done it. You were with me in the best year of high school. That was more important to me than all of the other years I had spent behind those oppressive walls.

We went off to college. You and I shared a dorm room barely big enough for one living thing to inhabit. I’m sorry I didn’t let you play in the dorm hall more. I should have. You and I were both stressed that year. I’m also sorry for getting you lost. I really didn’t know my way around that campus at first. We did it though! We conquered college, and we conquered it well. We learned to move confidently and quickly in a new environment. We became something of a spectacle in the music department. The other students admired you, and they enjoyed watching us perform. I think they thought your stage presence was better than mine. In any case, we found our place in that world as well.

This year has been the best of all. I have been more stressed than ever. My homework load has been astounding, but you didn’t even notice. Thank you for that. It nearly made my heart break to see you so sick this year. Why were you so sick? We never figured that out, and I am well aware that you could get sick very easily again. Still, despite your illness, you wanted to be with me. You did what you could, and tried to pretend you felt ok when I knew that you didn’t. Weekends of nonstop performing, travelling to singing competitions-none of it fazed you. You loved every minute of it. I hope this semester brings you good health and even more happiness.

You and I have been through so much together. So many adventures I could never forget. You have saved my life on more than one occasion and restored my sanity even more times. Your wagging tail has brought a smile to my face even after the worst has pulled me down. I have showed you off in presentations, explained your presence to more people than I can count, and responded to complements directed at you.

I do what I can to thank you. I take care of you the best I can. I keep you healthy and pretty, and I take you out in the snow for a good run whenever it’s possible, but none of this seems adequate to me. I just hope that someday, somehow, you will know that I appreciate everything you do for me. I thank God every day for creating you and others like you. I thank him for this magical bond, this friendship that has sprung between us. I know he is watching over you, and I pray that in your own special way, you will understand these words I have written.

Your best friend, Julie
