I did my taxes tonight...I knew I was going to have to pay, so I waited until the last minute. I just didn't know I was going to have to pay so very, very much

i didn't file my own taxes, until this year. they were so easy that even after my mom no longer claimed me as a dependent (3rd year of college?), she just did them for me, as i was often overseas or something. it could not have been simpler this time around- i had been intimidated, but i literally spent 5 min. filling out the form and then filed on the automated phone system. since i was out of the country living off of a 500 euro / month stipend for half of 2004 and temping, unemployed, or just starting my current job during the leftover months, i got a little over $100 back. i think i'd claimed 2 exemptions.
but in feb., my paycheck took a nose dive because the state is taking out retirement. i hadn't planned on that, so i feel like it's added some distress. but i'm pretty much keeping an even keel, and luckily, budgeted enough during my last 2 years of college to pay off my student loans within a year of graduation.
and i imagine that if i do spend 2 years in the peace corps, my taxes won't become complicated for a while. heck, i am nowhere near making serious plans to buy a car or a house...
that was all pointless rambling, but i do empathize with your position (getting screwed for not having two ankle-biters and a white picket fence around a home you own). and i definitely believe that the rich and megarich should pay a significantly higher percentage than they seem to pay.
