Writing Meme!

Stolen from frozen_delight. Pick a number (or numbers), and I'll answer. I'd love for other people to do this as well. Also, feel free to ask the questions about art as well as writing.

1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing.2. Is there any specific ritual you go through while/before/after your writing ( Read more... )

This one's easy. I have always loved stories, and I would often tell myself stories in the privacy of my own head. It felt only natural to try getting some of these down on paper/in pixels.

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that I didn't know about fanfic when I was younger. I suppose that depends on how much you think the world needed a Pern/G.I. Joe crossover.

I'm tempted to challenge you to write a drabble from that universe. Just for kicks.

13. This is a toughie, because the answer kind of depends on what day you ask me and what fandom I've been wallowing in of late. That said, one fic I've gone back to for multiple readings is "Cartographer's Craft" by copperbadge. It's a deeply satisfying AU/semi-fixit. In some ways, I find it more satisfying than canon.

16. It's kind of a hybrid. I always start with a route in mind, but will adjust course along the way as other ideas occur to me, or as I consciously pick up on other connections that were only subconscious to start. Sometimes, I'll have the feel of about 75% of the fic with a big gaping hole in the middle. In that case, I'll jump right in. Most of the time, by the time I get to the hole, I've figured out how to deal with it. Oftentimes, that part ends up being the best part of the fic.

4 and 9.

And they can apply to either writing or art, (so "artist(s) you admire" and "do you plan to do more than fanart?")

4. There's no way I can make a complete list, so I'll stick to a handful of people who are not on my flist whose work I admire desperately. In terms of writers, here are a few: Darth_mallow, who writes wonderful Hunger Games AUs. Copperbadge, who is just a damned good writer all around in a number of my favorite fandoms. Kellie Matthews, whose due South stuff is some of my favorite in that fandom (the fandom that first got me into slash in the first place). Art-wise, the first person who pops into mind is petite_madame - her technical skill is amazing, and I love that she can go from cutesy to hot to angsty. Another is bflyw, whose can do utter magic with photos ( ... )

Do you have links to darth mallow or copperbadge? I'm always looking for more (well-written) stuff to read.

I often think that success in the arts is more a matter of stubbornness and opportunity rather than skill and talent (especially when I see some of the movies that get released, or read some of the books (*koff*50shades*koff*) that get published.

So keep producing your art, and good luck finding your opportunities.

7. This is a no brainer - time and motivation, as long as I had them AT THE SAME TIME. That's my biggest problem when it comes to getting writing done.

11. Yikes. This is a tricky one. I would have to say it was some semi-RPF Bohr/Heisenberg fic I wrote several years back. (Semi because it's for the play "Copenhagen," so more like RPF once-removed.)

15. Crossovers! Especially drabble one-shot kinds of things. They're a great way to indulge little flashes of inspiration whether cracky or completely serious. I also keep getting ideas for long, epic crossovers, but I know better than to start 90% of the ones I think of.

Ooh, crossovers! I love them, done well. Even if I'm familiar with both canon(s?), I hesitate at the brink of crossovers, but I love when others do them well.

I...confess I may be glad about the dearth of Boyr/Heisenberg fic. And I hear you on time and motivation.

Thanks!

Meep! Let's see if I can do this.

One woman said little throughout the meeting, although she was clearly paying attention. She sat well back from the table, ankle resting on her knee and her head lolling against one hand with her fingers covering her mouth. Her dark, asymmetrical bob made her appear to be leaning at a much steeper angle than she really was. From time to time, he saw her cheeks lift as one statement or another amused her. The only other reaction he spotted from her was a barely-there eye roll when the conversation turned to hair-splitting minutiae.
