Story title: Films About Ghosts
Author: bellatemple
Fic Masterpost: Here
Pairing: Gen
Rating: R
Summary: A Winchester mind can be an incredibly dangerous place. Dean has always known that, of course, but he didn't know how bad it could be until he was neck deep in a subconscious wilderness, surrounded on all sides by ghosts of enemies and friends alike, each with their own agenda. All Dean wants to do is find Sam -- the real Sam -- and get out.

Artist's Notes: First of all, this is an amazing story, and I'm not just saying that because I'm the artist. The story delivers all of the mind-bendy darkness one would hope to find in a Winchester's subconscious. It also gave me lots and lots of delicious imagery to choose from. What you see below is only a fraction of what I considered doing as I read and re-read the story. Also, bellatemple was an absolute delight to work with. (Technical notes are at the end, where they're easier to skip.)

As with so many other of my creative endeavors, many, many thanks to aishuu and incandescens for their feedback and encouragement.

I had hoped to have time to do more story-specific illustrations, but at least I was able to get this one done. This is from the first section of the story, "The Road."

Following are the two sketches that I used to build the cover image.

Technical Notes: Media used include compressed charcoal, tinted charcoal, pastel, water-soluble graphite, watercolor pencil, Jack Daniels (This was completely accidental - I had my brush dish and my drink on the counter next to each other. Appropriately enough, this happened while working on "The Wall."), textured pastel paper, and bristol board. All of the lettering was done in SketchBook Pro, as was the sky in "The Wall." I also used the program and some stock photos of antiquey film to assemble the cover and make the icon.
