The Steel Remains
I see I didn't update about reading The Steel Remains. Really good book that. A different sort of take on fantasy novels. Rich new world with main characters that you don't really see in these types of books. If you like George R. R. Martin, I think you'd enjoy this new series too. It's unflinching, well written, and well paced, with a bit of humor to boot. It's not as epic as GRRM's books, but hopefully the smaller scale will prevent the knots that he's tied himself into with that series.
I also read his other book Altered Carbon which I nearly didn't finish. The pace wasn't quite what I had hoped for, and the central mystery was a bit convoluted, but the world he set up was really interesting and I'll probably dive into the sequel at some point down the road.
