Last Dance

A rather large casting spoiler for season two within. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

With apologies, after seeing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang my Jack/Ianto mix is on hold. Don’t worry, you’ll get it soon, it just needs a little extra work.
So, this is for (in no particular order): adafrog who voted for Jack, xel1980, almosttomorocco, sophieisgod and waxingobscure who voted for Jack/Ianto and sadly miss out for the time being, and love_jackianto and jades_shadow who berated me for making them choose. Hope you guys are happy!

Think of this as what Jack might play on his Victrola (He so has one, the man is a purist!) on any given day, whether to annoy his team, have a dance or just to make himself happy.
Music from the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and early 60’s, as well as one track from more recent years.

A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square - Vera Lynn

That certain night, the night we met / There was magic abroad in the air / There were angels dining at the Ritz / And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

There’s a waterlogged box of records on Jack’s desk and the sounds of Vera Lynn waft enticingly down the stairs. Jack’s shadow dances one half of a waltz around and around the small office.
Tosh carefully makes sure everyone avoids him for the day.

Moonlight Serenade - Glen Miller

Instrumental

Jack approves of Gwen’s musical tastes, and he tells her as such.
“I once danced to this on an invisible spaceship, tethered to Big Ben, in the middle of an air raid” He laughs and spins her across the floor of his office.
“Don’t be silly!” Gwen giggles.

He Wears A Pair Of Silver Wings - Kay Kyser & His Orchestra

But when I'm left alone and we are far apart / I sometimes wonder what tomorrow brings / For I adore that crazy guy who taught my happy heart / To wear a pair of silver wings

“What is this shit Harkness?” Owen demands of the music playing in the med bay as Jack dissects their latest catch.
“I mean it’s one thing to take away the biggest perk of my job, but do you have to listen to this tat while you do it?”
“He with those wings on his tunic, and me with my heart on my sleeve...” Jack sings in reply.
Owen scowls.

Oh, Look At Me Now! - Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Connie Haines and The Pied Pipers”

I never knew the technique of kissing / I never knew the thrill I could get from your touch / I never knew much / Oh! look at me now!

After the incident in the med bay Jack takes it upon himself to re-educate Owen in matters musical. This is done mainly by playing Frank Sinatra at incessantly high volume until the younger man stomps into his office and tears the record from the old Victrola in pride of place.
“Don’t you have better things to do?” He hisses, throwing it onto the desk. Jack shrugs.
“Not really”

Que Sera Sera - Doris Day

Que Sera, Sera / Whatever will be, will be / The future's not ours, to see / Que Sera, Sera / What will be, will be

After she’s been abducted, almost killed twice and rescued all in the same day, Martha’s understandably a little jumpy and Jack comforts her in the only way he knows how without actually sleeping with her.
“My mum used to sing this” She mumbles from somewhere buried in his shirt.
“So I hear” He replies and she looks up with curiosity.
“What? It’s not liked I called her just to ask what songs you liked as a kid! I also wanted to know your favourite food, embarrassing nicknames...”

Cupid - Sam Cooke

Now, I don't mean to bother you but I'm in distress / There's danger of me losin' all of my happiness / For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist / And this you can fix

It becomes blindingly apparent Ianto is not a willing dance partner, as Jack moves him stiffly around the small area in front of the workstations.
“Come on, loosen up! Anyone would think you’re not enjoying this” He says, giving a little grope for support. Ianto blushes deeply and pulls away from him, arms crossed.
“It’s not that I don’t enjoy it Sir, It’s more that you demand on having an audience” He frowns a little, his gaze fixed on the team huddled quietly on the lounge.
“If it makes you feel better” Gwen pipes up helpfully, “You’re very good...”

Things - Bobby Darin

Memories are all I have to cling to (cling to) / And heartaches are the friends I'm talkin' to (talkin' to) / When I'm not thinkin' of-a just how much I love you (love you) / Well, I'm-a thinkin' 'bout the things we used to do

“Didn’t someone do a cover of this a few years back?” Gwen asks innocently one morning, as the Victrola crackles into life with a playful tune. Jack’s mug hits the wall just above her head.
“It’s best if you don’t mention it” Ianto deadpans as he gingerly picks up the shattered pieces. “As far as Jack’s concerned, it doesn’t exist”

Save The Last Dance For Me - John Barrowman

Laugh and sing, but while we're apart / Don't give your heart to anyone / And don't forget who's takin' you home / And in whose arms you're gonna be / So darlin' save the last dance for me

Jack finishes his song and takes a long, theatrical bow, blowing kisses to his invisible audience.
“Bravo!” Tosh shouts from the door, her arms laden with printouts and files and the like. They fall to the ground ignored when he restarts the song and they dance around the desk, laughing as Jack bends her into a low dip.
As it turns out, Tosh isn’t a bad singer either.

As if I need to remind you, comments are love, love, love.
