LIVE! From the 25th NESCBWI Spring Conference!

May 14, 2011 09:23

Yes, I'm blogging instead of attending my second session. I've been itching to post for ages and now that I've got a bit of a lull in my conference schedule, I'm taking full advantage of the free wifi and complimentary computers in the hotel lounge.

My second session was one of those workshops I clicked on when the online registration for the NESCBWI event asked me for the umpteenth time "You have nothing for Workshop Session B. Please select one of the following:" and instead of following my advice to my students to "read every answer" and select the option that read "none" I picked one that seemed "eh, sure" instead.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover my assigned editor for the Manuscript Critique was one I actually - albeit peripherally - knew. Via Hollins gals and Griper gals I'd actually heard of Stacy Whitman and so was confident the session would be a constructive one and not one where I had to fear whether the reader knew what they were doing.

The lobby is teeming with writers and illustrators, the smell of caffeine is in the air and I'm contemplating going to hang out on the patio until lunch or my next session or whichever comes first . . . I should check my schedule. But first I'm going to go vote on the posters.

Oh how I've missed this! I love conferences. I love coming out from our respective writing holes, emerging with our writing crews and tapping back into the greater collective of writers, illustrators, thinkers and soaking up the creative energy.

Things have gone quiet. The second session must be underway.

I am off!
