The tandem kayak...
One of the two kayaks was due back at the rental place yesterday morning. So, Chris' father dutifully returned it. He then returned to the house with a tandem kayak to play with so he could take his sister out on the water. She has grip-strength issues in one hand, so would not be able to control a kayak by herself. I had already been out that morning in the remaining single kayak...
Anyway, last two days were spent lounging and shopping on the southern island. Found a really cool pottery shop, and a neat coffee shop called "The Dancing Turtle." Isn't that a cool name? Much more Cool Stuff(tm) was purchased.
We went to fancy dinner on Wednesday night, hence the leftover tuna steak. Chris' aunt and uncle left for New Jersey last night, so we hung around the house most of the time and did the family-hang-out-and-do-nothing thing.
Today was spent sight seeing on Roanoke Island with Chris' parents. We went to the Elizabethan Gardens, the Aquarium, and to the Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo. They have a full scale replica of a 16th Century English sailing ship that you can board and poke around in and a "settlement," which is more like a little hands-on campsite thingy. There was some one there demonstrating a period lathe and other woodworking tools, a space set up for nine-pin (bowling), examples of an officer's tent and a common sailor's tent and a little blacksmith's shop. I think the tents were Panther Pavilions... Anyway, the blacksmithing guy was very nice and he gave me the nail he made for demonstration. He then made a little decorative leaf out of the same stock and let Chris' mom keep it. Then we drove back to the house, with a stop first at "Bubba's" for some barbecue take-out. Closest I've come so far to North Carolina barbecue, with the thin vinegar sauce. It was good. Most of the time eating out here has been seafood, not barbecue. Can't really complain, I guess.
I guess that's it. This is our last night in the house. We're driving back up to New Jersey tomorrow, and I'll be back in New York on Sunday morning. And then the packing frenzy begins in earnest. Way too much stuff to do...
