[It's not necessarily the crows transmitting this... with his Powers at higher strength, Cerceus is more than capable of making himself heard through all of Sheol, though the echo of it through the crow gives it an odd sort of stereo effect. His song is wordless and powerful, haunting on the wind, an expression of crushing grief strong enough to ( Read more... )

[From almost the first few notes, Xiao Long Nu was crying. She's a very emotionally active person, and it's hard for her to hide her emotions. She doesn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing he's upset her, but after he's finished she speaks reluctantly and through tears.]

It's not fair! People like you shouldn't be able to make things so beautiful!

[Still sitting near his crow, he opens his mouth to respond, then remembers he promised and snaps it shut. It's not worth it anyway. Better to just lie face-down in the heather and let his silence speak for him.]

... that was... why would you sing such a sad song? You must be... in so much pain...

[there's the sound of grass crunching and a sigh. His voice is flat, with a thick London accent]

Yeah. I was. Now I'm.... mostly numb.

Do you want to talk about it? Something like that shouldn't be bottled up inside... it will only get worse.

No offense, but I don't know you from Adam, so.... no.

Nice of you to offer, though.

[Joshua has never really had anything against messing with other people's minds or emotions against their will, but other people doing the same to him... that's another story, thank you. He spends most of the song with his eyes shut and his hands firmly over his ears, in a futile attempt to block out the pain; it doesn't help in the least to know that he could probably have ignored it easily if he hadn't so recently drained his own powers dry.

By the time the song ends and its effects fade, he is not in a good mood. He's silent for a minute or two, getting his emotions back under control, but when he speaks there's still a taut, angry edge in his voice beneath the feigned indifference.]

Nicely sung, I suppose, but a bit... ah... melodramatic, don't you think?

[dull, flat tone, thick South London accent]

Here's an idea. If you don't know what the hell you're talking about, shut your mouth.

Let's see. Melodrama, from the Greek meloidos, musical, and drama... referred to a form of theater in which music was often used in an effort to enhance the audience's emotional responses, I believe. Also tends, now, to mean something exaggerated and over-emotional in general.

[thoughtfully] ...No, no -- not the precise context in which it's sometimes used, perhaps, but I'm pretty sure it could still be said to apply here.

I know. You think you're clever. The truth is, you're an emotionally bankrupt arse who doesn't give a flying fuck about anyone except himself. That's fine, mate, I was the same way when I got here. So here's a little advice, right, from me to you - keep your nose out before it gets bitten off. Just because you don't have anything to lose, that doesn't mean the rest of us had lives totally devoid of meaning. Just 'cause nobody's crying over you, that doesn't mean nobody's crying over me. And just because you don't value anyone enough that losing them inspires grief, that doesn't mean I'm that misanthropic. So again... if you don't know what the hell you're talking about, shut. Your. Mouth. You have no fucking clue what I've lost, or how I feel about it, so piss off.

[it's not that he's ignoring Zuko. It's more that... he has no excuse, so he doesn't bother making one. There's just the sound of a soft sigh and the crunch of the heather as he rolls over.]

[Axel's voice is quiet, and hard to read; he has his hood up so you can't see if he's crying or not. (He is.)]

Would you like to be alone, Cy?

[Slips out of the trees, soon enough that it's clear he probably wasn't far away to begin with, moving to stand at Cy's side.]

[he's lying face-down in the heather, slightly curled-up, eyes half open and staring at nothing. He looks... comatose. Lost.]
