I read a book in 12 hours yesterday, on top of the couple hours at the Taste with family.
I don't do this often, and forgive the l33t, but:
OMGZ!
David Gemmell - Lord of the Silver Bow - yay!
If you ask me, I think I almost cried when two of the characters bit it. And that has not happened since high school, really. It was that great kind intense characterization that only comes from begining the story with entirely differing opinions about the characters, then developing an affection for them over time. And here I thought that the story had been covered well by the likes of Bradley. I was greatly mistaken.
Even if you have read The Iliad and think you have had your fix of old Trojan War tales, if you ever mildly enjoyed myth/fiction from that era: stop what you are doing right now and go read it. It is just that good. The characters are not cardboard copy wastelands or flawless heros. I mean, come on, HUBRIS is a lovely word that the Greeks loved to use in connection with their heros and their inherant human weaknesses.
If I could just write half as compellingly as Gemmell, I would not doubt what I am working on for a moment.
Now, off to bookmooch to see if I can find another of the set.
