Gokudera, Yamamoto thinks, is kind of like a baseball.

Probably, Yamamoto thinks further, because everybody's like a baseball.

(He never does think for very long about anything before baseball comes up.)

But it's kind of like -- when you get a new ball, like meeting a new person, you have to work it in, right? Get all that shiny new stiffness out of it and play around with it until it's comfortable in your hands. When you first tear that plastic cover off and bounce it, it's always kind of too hard, you know? It always goes too far too fast. And it's slippery, way too easy to drop. You have to mess it up, get messed up with it, wail on it with a bat and throw and catch it into rough leather gloves before you can take it to a real game.

And that's like people!

Sort of. Except every baseball kinda takes the same amount of time to get worked in enough to use, and people are different. Way different. Some people just roll into your life and it's perfect just the way it starts, and some people --

Haha, some people are like baseballs with spikes. Like baseballs with spikes that are all covered in metal and you're looking at it like oh geez, how the heck am I supposed to play with this thing? It's too heavy to throw and it doesn't bounce anywhere and if you hit it with a bat it'd get stuck in the wood, and -- what do you do with something like that?

Well, the same thing. It makes sense in his head -- they're all baseballs, right? So the same tactic must work on them all. Carry it around with you. Play with it. Dirty it. Hit it. Get hit by it. Figure out how it rolls and bounces and flies. Wear all that new stuff off -- new shiny stiffness or spikes or whatever it is, it doesn't matter. Someday it'll be smooth enough --

And that's enough, right? Because people are like baseballs. He doesn't have to know what's inside. Haha, there are people who for some reason need to know all the tiny details, and then there are like Tsuna who somehow make their own shortcuts to the center -- but nah, he's just a regular player. He doesn't have to get there. He knows there's stuff, past the worn leather and stitching -- coiled string, he thinks he read once in a magazine. Lots and lots of coiled string and a core, some complicated stuff he didn't bother to remember. But --

That's thinking too much. And thinking too much just messes things up. What matters about a baseball is how it feels in your hand, how you know what it'll do, how you can trust it with your game. And all that stuff -- it's the same with people, right? Except they're not in your hand and there's no game and stuff, but hahaha, you know what he means. The same feeling.

Maybe it'll take a day or maybe it'll take a year, but all baseballs get pretty good eventually, and he's seen a lot of baseballs. Stiff new leather ones, ones with scratchy stitching, ones with stitches, ones who gave them the stitches (that one came with tonfas). And then this one, metal and covered with spikes --

-- hey, there he is!

Better get working on that.
