She gets back, somehow.
She's not sure if she's glad.
The door is heavier than she remembers -- the stairs steeper, longer, more tiring -- the hallway darker. Or maybe it's only because she doesn't know if she wants to reach the end of it and face what's there. But she reaches it, because there's nowhere else to go. There's another door, heavier than the last, and she's home.
Or at least, what might still be home, if she says the right words --
Eye closed, nerves steeled, she steps in and gets as far as Mukuro-sama before the words in her mouth dry up and she's looking up, pleading silently for help from anything that's there.
There isn't, though. Anything there. The place is empty. And silent -- save for the faint hum of machinery coming from the other room.
So she steps over there. Stops in the doorway with a soft rustle of clothing. And she's ready to repeat anything, everything, nothing. But before she can, the figure in front of the glowing monitor moves aside, and she's staring at the inside of the small Millefiore hideout that she's just left on the screen -- along with others, new ones, ones she hasn't seen, two, three, each one a grainy security camera image --
And she only tears herself away when Mukuro speaks, contemplative, distant, amused as ever.
Do you want to know something I've learned, Chrome?
Mukuro-sama...
The only way time ever goes is forward. It's something that most people don't know.
And she thinks about that, quietly digests the words for a few seconds -- and then, the apology dies in her throat and what comes out is,
I won't fail you again.
And Mukuro turns, smiling the smile that frightens everyone but her, and says,
That's my little Chrome.

Wait. What. You want me to talk about -- WHAT?
Uhhhhh, I guess I could. But dude, that's really weird...
Uh, well anyway, I guess I never really thought about it until I met Akihiko-sempai --
WHOA WHOA WAIT DUDE NOT LIKE THAT
I mean like, he's the first one I met that --
NO NOT LIKE THAT EITHER
I JUST MEAN AKIHIKO-SEMPAI IS TOTALLY GAY, OKAY?
Like dude, the way he sits and stuff, look at him sometime! And he does some weird sewing on his gloves, with like actual needles and thread, and the weird stuff he wears and -- he's totally flaming, man. Whoa, whoa, n-not that I have anything against that! Respect, and tolerance, and acceptance and whatever, I'm, you know, just saying. That he kind of shoots rainbows everywhere.
UH, but right, then that's that other kid -- Minato, you know? Kind of a quiet guy and stuff. And lots of girls like him too, I mean, I never really thought about him being gay or anything until he started hanging out with that transfer student guy from France who's even gayer than Akihiko-sempai and -- then I kinda started noticing like whoa, dude, he hangs out with a LOT of dudes, and they're all like trusting and caring and... feely and stuff, and it's kinda like whoa, WHOA, dude --
Who else is there... oh yeah, Yuka-tan! Well -- there are all these rumors about her dating dudes and stuff going around school all the time. But they're never actually TRUE or anything (whoa, dude, has she even dated a guy? ever?) and if you bring any of them up she gets all pissy at you, you know? ...yeah, I'm pretty sure she's into chicks. One of those like, lipstick lesbians or something.
... you know, I don't think I've ever seen Mitsuru-sempai like a dude, either.
... and Fuuka too! Her and Natsuki are kinda really close, if you know what I mean...
Wait
Wait, wait, whoa, WHOA, what the hell? Is everyone gay? Why didn't I notice this before? No way, man, what the hell are the chances of like every single person with a Persona being gay --
... wait, unless the Personas TURN you gay or something --
WAIT
NO
OH SHIT
AM I NEXT

M is for MUSICAL.
--and Gokudera asks, what the hell are you doing here? and Yamamoto says, haha, I don't know, I just like listening! And Gokudera replies, you don't know shit about music, baseball freak.
And Yamamoto just gives him his stupid smile.
Gokudera's right, though. At least about the knowing. Sure, Yamamoto's learned the basics of A-G and treble-bass in music classes in high school and could maybe even explain it to other people if asked, but beauty and intricacy and meaning and all that stuff -- Gokudera's right, he doesn't really get it. Haha, it's just notes and melody and music, right?
Maybe he doesn't think enough.
But -- Gokudera doesn't get it, either. Maybe because he thinks too much. He doesn't get that the appreciation's not in the perfectly timed crescendo/decrescendo. Or lilting arcs of sixteenth-notes. Or anywhere on the sheet at all. He doesn't get that it's because sometimes, when he's playing and not paying attention to everything else, Gokudera almost smiles, and it's kind of like, well, Yamamoto likes seeing his friends happy, right?
And so he likes listening -- it's just that simple.
And Gokudera asks like always, what the hell are you doing here? And Yamamoto says like always, haha, I don't know, I just like listening! And Gokudera replies like always, you don't know shit about music, baseball freak.
But Yamamoto just smiles. And Gokudera keeps playing.
