I am upset by suffering in fiction and non-fiction. I suppose I have a healthy sense of empathy. I cry pink puffy tears - more often and more easily with stories and news reports than with people I personally know, though. (I tend to go into pragmatic rescue mode with people I personally know.) I even cried at the end of Toy Story 3 when Andy says goodbye to his toys. My mom mocked me, but Coco told me it was ok. I have a hard time with violence and natural disasters - especially how these affect children and elderly. I will read or listen to these stories because suffering is a part of this life, and I don't want to be an ostrich with my head in the sand. I'd rather know so I can pray and perhaps act rather than live in denial. Oddly enough I cry when I'm really angry or frustrated too.
I was thinking about this topic this afternoon and getting a little bummed when I was in the car and this really pretty song came on the radio. Some of the lyrics were, "When my world is shaking, Heaven stands, When my heart is breaking, I never leave Your hands"

And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong. (Luke 23:41)
