In keeping with my recent save the world, save money theme I've been thrift shopping for a few winter clothes for the kiddos this week. Today I met my friend, Mary-Claire (MC), at the Junior League's Thrift Store's bag sale, and we split a $5 bag. It turned out that the clearance was on summer clothes (duh!). But MC mentioned that she had just gone through her three year old's clothes from the last year and asked if I wanted any of them. So I pushed the kids a little harder and scored a garbage bag packed full of free clothes for Coco. Many of these clothes are unique works of art sewn by my talented and generous friend.

After Coco's "rest period" (which has really become more about my sanity than it is about her rest), Collette and I had a fashion show to see what fit. I propped a full length mirror against her wall and dumped the clothes in the middle of her floor. As I started to sort dresses, tops, pants and outfits Coco squealed with delight, grabbed the girliest dress and said, "This one, Mommy! I want to wear this one!" I said for the one hundredth time today, "How do you ask nicely?" Coco said, "PLEEEEEEASE, Mommy. I want to wear THIS ONE!" She was literally jumping up and down. I smiled before reminding her that asking nicely was more like, "Mommy, will you help me put this dress on please?" As she mumbled something vaguely closer to the nice asking I suggested I helped her put on this pink, handmade dress, which proved ideal for twirling. Collette rushed to the mirror and kissed herself. There's more twirling and a few "I look like a princess, Mommy!" exclamations before she leaps at an orange skirt with tiny white polka dots and says, "THIS ONE, Mommy! Put this one on now, Mommy. And swimsuits! Let's wear swimsuits." What I thought might be a chore was really a delightful mother and daughter moment.

We played dress up for over an hour, which is a long time for a two and a half year old to cooperate with anything. For his part, Art napped through most of it and chewed on various pieces at the end. We didn't try every item on, but I managed to get through the ones that inspired the least confidence. We ended when changing outfits was becoming a power struggle, and I realized that we were way past dinner time (oops). Of course, now I'm back to having too many clothes for Collette. Through clearance sales, presents and hand me downs we always end up with more than she can possibly wear. Once I counted almost 30 dresses! I'll need to edit, edit, edit again. Where's Stacy London when you need her? But this is a nice problem to have, and I get to pass along some really cute clothes to our friends.

Art still needs a few long sleeved tops or onesies and Coco needs a pair of Mary Janes in the next size up. I can't decide black or brown or pink shoes? I'm leaning toward black or pink since we have a brown pair of boots someone gave us. I've bid a few times on Ebay, but I keep losing. My heart isn't in it. I'll probably buy these last items online or somewhere local since I want to be finished with clothes for a few months.

Your adornment must not be merely external - braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. (1 Peter 3:3-4)
