I feel like it's time I wrote another season wrap up seeing as how one of my favorite pass times is to reflect on my Emmy nominated life.
Last season started with a lot of misery and a whole new attitude. Calvin, totally broken hearted over to loss of Cuddy, decided to finally change himself for the better. Well, that was after a good few months of pointless mourning that nearly cost him his career.
Destined to find a semblance of a life, to profit from this hard life lesson, Calvin opened up further to his expert friend Jenna and supported his love interest Kristen in her humorous excuse for a boyfriend. All while transitioning further and further towards a full time college career. All the while pining for his lost Cuddy.
After continuous strike outs with Cuddy; Sending Valentines flowers and supporting her band performances, she told Calvin she would never love him again and Calvin reverted to an old school plan of attack; revenge through success.
In an attempt to cultivate the appearance of moving on, Calvin seduces a flirtatious co-worker only to reveal that she was quite possibly the most irritating selection he could have made, fortunately, she was friends with a character who had only been seen twice during the last two seasons. Lauren. Finally the cosmic game of the writers had been revealed when Calvin not only realized Lauren would serve as remarkable pivot towards recapturing his loves heart, but that she also knew Cuddy in high-school.
This all came together when during a surprise mid season sweep, Cuddy broke the silence and began talking with Calvin once again. Everything was a going according to plan and as Calvin and Lauren became closer friends and Cuddy left her boyfriend in hopes of finding more feminine company. Playing the supportive friend, Calvin was able to weave himself back into the fabric of Cuddy's life, unsure if he could actually accomplish his longed for reconciliation. Still, destined to prove he had changed, Calvin would not abandon her. It payed off after Calvin finally admitted to Cuddy that he loved her. She responded with a passionate kiss as they fell asleep only to wake up to a text message from Brooke that she had just dumped her boyfriend.
Yep, quite the tropey episode.
As you can imagine, the story quickly shifted back to a variation of balancing Brooke and Cuddy, although this time Calvin was determined to keep Cuddy in his life. Which he did at a huge cost to his relationship with Brooke and his career in college.
There was a short plot device that took Brooke out of the country on a quest for self discovery that gave Cuddy and Calvin's relationship time to bloom.
In hopes to spend more time on his studies, Calvin also left his job to fulfill a full time college career.
Soon enough though, Brooke returned and things began to grow more complicated as her re-ignited feelings began to apply pressure on Calvin's lifestyle along with the development of a shallow interest in a fellow student who caught his interest.
There was another DragonCon episode that brought Emily back into Calvin's life for a short but sentimental plot line involving their bittersweet affection for each-other.
As the year wrapped up and winter began to settle in, so did a fowl air around Calvin. Brooke became more irritated with Calvin's relationship and social behavior and despite having no other professional commitments, Calvin continued to suffer academically.
As the year wrapped up there was a brief break for Calvin to go to DisneyWorld with his G-Unit, sans Emily. The episode basically served as a set up for Calvin to end up writing a sentimental message to Emily, resulting in a heartfelt response which also served as a way to wrap up the Emily story-arc and add the possibility of her returning for the next season.
Jenna, having already broken and reunited communication once this year and finding herself getting too emotionally involved with Calvin, decides to cut communication in hopes of maturing her relationship with boyfriend she's moving in with.
Calvin returned home only to find things growing increasingly more complicated as his semester came to an end. In what is one of the most cataclysmic (but possibly most confounded) moment, Calvin finally broke the ice with his mystery classmate; Kim Novak on the last day of classes.
Sure enough a ridiculous plot device sent Cuddy out of town for Christmas leaving Kim and Calvin time to get to know each other and escalate their relationship before Cuddy returned to share a intimate night with Calvin exchanging holiday gifts.
Disgusted with the growing amount of sordid drama, Brooke told Calvin she would not be talking to him anymore until he had gotten his life straightened out.
The season finale literally ended with Cuddy and Amanda meeting face to face as the new triangle rung in the new year.
Heart broken by Brooke, pressured by Cuddy, and intrigued by the seductive Kim, Calvin starts a whole new year of uncertainty... Oh and he's really contemplating getting married in a year.
Critique:
Calvin is practically where he started two seasons ago.
Sure, the kids grown as a person. But really this is just the same bullshit he was doing two years ago when he was juggling Lindsay, Brooke and Cuddy. Now Lindsay is Amanda and Brooke and Cuddy have traded places. I suppose it's kind of realistic he didn't make the Transition to Temple University but I see that as a way for the writers to milk one more season. It's obvious Cuddy and Calvin's relationship will be severely tested this year as it was hinted in last season that they might move in together. Kim should really make that possibility complicated no matter how her role develops but it's my personal feeling she'll just become another Lauren... without the sex.
Personally I really hope the show makes a huge leap in a new direction this year. Either with Calvin actually starting his band, writing a book or at the very least moving to California. It's obvious that the character is going no where fast even to him.
If he doesn't make a huge change this year I don't think there will be much of a show worth watching.
