[ History ] :
When Jack was a child he lived on the Boeshane peninsula on a colony planet for humans with his mother, father, and little brother, Grey. When he was around the age of 13 his home was attacked by an alien race and he lost his brother and father in the assault. This attack prompted him to join the Time Agency so that he could search for Gray who had been kidnapped.
Although he never found his brother, his work with the time agency took him all over the universe and had him gain all sorts of experience imaginable. Eventually something happened that made the agency erase a large chunk of his memories. When Jack realized this he immediately left the agency and took up the life of a conman. His exploits in this field eventually led him to 1940’s England, height of world war two, were he acquired the identity of a dead soldier, Captain Jack Harkness, and took his place in the army.
While there, a piece of space debris crashed and, his conman senses kicking in, decided to set up a beacon to entice someone from the space agency to come down and buy it off of him. Who it enticed instead was The Doctor, an alien called a Timelord and his human companion, Rose Tyler. Jack did try to con The Doctor, but the Timelord saw right through him and revealed that the strange events recently occurring in the area were caused by Jack’s “space debris”.
After Jack proved he was more than just a conman, having risked his own life to save the lives of countless others, The Doctor offered for Jack to travel with him, which he quickly accepted. The three traveled together for a long time, until they found themselves on a T.V. Station (in space) that was being run by Daleks, a power hungry race of robotic aliens.
In a big station-wide showdown, Jack helped to fight the invading Daleks, however he was cornered and “exterminated”. Minutes after word, Rose, having been sent away from danger, came back with the space-time vortex’s power running through her. With it she brought Jack back to life, however she couldn’t fully control it so she accidentally brought him back forever, essentially making him a fact in time.
The Doctor left Jack on the station, sensing he was “wrong” somehow, and Jack was left with only his Time Vortex Manipulator to save him. He figured the best way to find The Doctor was to transport back to Earth and stay in Cardiff, Wales where a large Rift in Time and Space was sitting, bleeding energy. Unfortunately, his Manipulator isn’t the best transporter in the world and ended up dumping him 200 years from the time he wanted to be in and short-circuiting.
Jack pretty much gave up on ever finding The Doctor and so settled down, got married, and lived a normal life. However, he soon discovered he wasn’t aging and when he got killed in a fight, he came back to life. For 200 years Jack lived in Cardiff, once again waiting for The Doctor, hoping he’d be able to ‘fix’ him.
During his time in Cardiff, Jack became aware of an anti-alien institution called “Torchwood” and at the same time they became aware of him, his immortality, and his connection with The Doctor, their main target. The forced him into working for them, claiming they’d lock him away forever if he didn’t. For a very long time (most of the 200 years) he was more of an agent for hire then an actual working member of Torchwood, at least until the 20th century when he decided to really join. On the eve of the new millennia, his boss got a hold of alien tech that drove him crazy and caused him to kill everyone including himself, leaving Jack in charge of Torchwood 3 (Torchwood 1 being in London, and 2 being in Dublin).
While in charge of Torchwood, Jack hired Suzie Castello, Dr. Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, and Ianto Jones as his team, a few months later he also hired PC Gwen Cooper (and on the same day Suzie commited suicide).
Over the next couple years Jack got a lot closer to his team as they faced hardships and near-death experiences together (or actual death for him). However, about a year and a half after Gwen Cooper joined, Jack’s long-time missing brother, Grey appeared with an old flame of Jack’s and wreacked havic on Cardiff, the team, and especially Jack himself.
Grey decided to bury his brother in the ground at around 3000 B.C. resulting in Jack continuously resurrecting and then suffocating again for ages until he was found by Torchwood again in the late 1800s and dug up and put in cryogenic for the remaining time till he caught up with his own timeline. Despite his miraculous return and defeat of his brother, who he couldn’t kill but instead put in cryogenics, Gray still managed to hit Jack hard by causing the deaths of Toshiko Sato and Owen Harper.
Despite being two members down, the team mourned and moved on with their duties. Disater struck again about six months later when an alien speices known only as the 456 invaded earth. The English government had Torchwood destroyed and surrendered to whatever the 456 wanted.
Jack pulled together what resources they had left and tried to stage an attack. He and his (now boyfriend) Ianto Jones stormed the place where the 456 were staying and tried to threaten and get them to leave. However the aliens only responded by releasing an airborne virus that killed the hundreds in the building, including Ianto and Jack.
When Jack came to later on with Gwen and Ianto’s dead body nearby, he had already made up his mind to give in, unable to come up with a solution. The government locked him up and sent Gwen away and he stayed there until someone who thought he could help released him and offered him a possible solution. They could kill the aliens if they had a child to focus the harmful wavelength through, the only child nearby at the time was Jack’s own grandson, who he was forced to sacrifice and watch die for the survival of mankind.
The loss of Ianto combined with needing to sacrifice his grandson was too much for Jack and after roaming the Earth for six months, he decided there was nothing keeping him there anymore and claimed the place was a graveyard. So instead Jack used his, now repaired, Vortex Manipulator to send a message out into space so a passing cargo ship could ‘beam’ him up.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Harkness [ Personality ] :
Jack Harkness is considered the universe’s biggest flirt, and this is mainly due to his con-man past and his ability to manipulate people if he needs to. However, he does genuinely care for others and actually puts great stock in the abilities of humans and other sentient creatures. Because of the trauma he suffered at the end of season three when he lost his lover and had to kill his own grandson, Jack is no longer the outgoing and confident flirt that used to be the trademark Jack.
Now he’s more introverted and broody, but that doesn’t stop him from caring for others and being interested in their business. He almost prefers getting involved in things that don’t concern him, just so he can avoid his own past. Jack has never been one who enjoyed talking about the more painful things of his past, but now, he avoids his history like the plague. More often than not can be found in his “room” or in a bar either trying to forget or, the complete opposite, brooding in his free time.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Jack has extensive knowledge of alien species and customs, he also has a ‘better than average’ grasp on technology. Jack is a natural born leader and so is very good at dealing with missions and things that involve groups.
Jack has one supernatural ability: due to an event in his past where he died at the (“hands”?) of the Daleks. However, Rose Tyler, a girl he was traveling with at the time used the space-time vortex to resurrect him.
Because of that he was infused with the vortex’s energy, causing him to become a fixed point in time. This meant that no matter how hard he tried at first, he cannot die and is able to regenerate any part of his body. As well as not being able to die, his ageing process has been slowed down significantly.
Jack is charismatic and level-headed, he focuses on the best possible outcome and will do what needs to be done to achieve it. He is a natural-born leader, and has at least a basic knowledge on just about everything, truly a ‘Jack-of-all-trades’.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Nothing that hasn’t already been stated.
[ Sample ] :
Jack paced, then sat, then paced again. He couldn’t sit still, he didn’t want to. The whole point of running away had been to keep on running and not stop. Not for a while at least. He couldn’t stop or even pause, if he did, the voices, the faces, they’d engulf him.
Suzie, riddled with bullet holes; Owen, eradiated, and falling to pieces; Tosh, gunshot wound still bleeding, dying her white shirt red; his grandson’s innocent adoring face covered in blood and forever screaming; Ianto, so cold, so blue, so lifeless, gone from the world, all of them were gone but they wouldn’t leave him.
How ironic that the people he loved most never truly left him like he said they did, they were always there, their accusatory glares and broken bodies haunting his thoughts. If it got too quiet, if he felt anything beyond a hollow contentment, and they’d be there, Reminding him he couldn’t get too comfortable.
Some small part of him, the rational part perhaps, figured if he kept running they’d become like all the others in his past, memories and nothing more, but a larger part of him never wanted them to leave. He wanted the reminder so they’d never be just another memory.
A voice that was barely understandable came over the comm. And announced their departure.
“Finally.”
He laid back on his bunk and watched as the phantoms surrounded him.
