Yesterday I went to my first Drum lesson. There is a Music school here in napa and I signed up for weekly private lessons. I've had their number in my "to do" list for about 2 months but something got under my skin last weekend and i finally called them and signed myself up.
Its not cheap, like really not cheap. But I am saving money right now, so i figure i might as well give this a shot. I'll never get where i think i'd like to be by putting it off. I'm no musical prodigy either, so i need instruction.
The lesson went well, i wasn't super impressed with the teacher. He seemed out of his element, like he didn't know what to do with me. I am guessing this is because it looks like 90% of their clientèle are under the age of 15, and he isn't used to teaching adults. I'll give him a couple more lessons and see if it changes, if not then i'll reschedule my lessons for Thursday because they have a different teacher on those days.
He seemed pretty surprised at how easily I got the basic beats even though I told him I've been playing Rock band for 9 months. At the end of the lesson he told me to buy "A Funky Primer: For the Rock Drummer" and start practicing the first couple beats in it for next week.
Well I just finished playing the first 2 pages (36 different 4/4 beats) in ROCK BAND. They told me to buy a practice pad so I did, but my sister had the genius idea of practicing in the "Freestyle drum trainer" mode in Rock band. BEST IDEA EVAR. I've been playing in there for like 2 hours now, and its really cool making awesome beats while NOT reading the skittles flying at my face. Instead i am reading off bars of music, which I figure is a better thing to train my brain on. Needless to say I am once again cruising the likes of musiciansfriend.com to look at what kind of electronic set I can get. If i keep playing like this I am afraid i might do some damage to my much cheaper Rock Band set.
Did I mention the girl at the desk of the music school is ridiculously attractive? yeah its been a good couple of days.
