just to see you smile id do anything

when i drive somewhere that requires me to be in the car for more than 45 minutes i put my ipod on shuffle. yes, this does involve a lot of skipping, but it also brings songs that i may have forgotten i loved back to me or i find new ones that i have to repeat just to soak up my new found love. its a gamble, but the odds are in my favor.

this is probably going to be a repeat of two, three, or a dozen things i have written before. however, i will never be able to say it enough. music is amazing.

"Music is more than just lyrics mixed in with instruments, it is more than just a party, more than popularity, more than a beat. Music is inspiration, it is reality, it is fear, love, hate, aggressive, happy, sad, creative. It is total emotion.
Our lives revolve around music. We relate to it, we react to it, we sing to it. We may not always see its importance, but it is always in our presence. If not heard, it is thought about, if not important to us, it carries us through every step of the way. That is the beauty of music, no one can ever take it away. Take advantage of free advice from a song writer, retrieve emotions, and know that this melody can never hurt you."

i have tried to find out who said this, but i cant. i think it may have been someone from new found glory, but im not positive. nonetheless, it is the most accurate way to describe my feelings.

i am constantly amazed at how much music serves as a bookmark in my life. blink 182 marked the time in my life where i was becoming my own person. without them, i would not be me and i would not have people like patrick or daryl in my life. copeland and mae mark the time in my life when i found out you dont have to be loud to make a point. dashboard marks several chapters in my life from high school to life after college, as my life changed so did chris's music but he still sticks to his roots and so do i. when i picked up patrick for the first time, i was more worried about what cd was playing in my car than what i was wearing. i went with the weakend - how everyone ruins everything and vice versa ep because i knew he liked pop-punk and this cd was slightly obscure enough to give me a few cool points. i know a roadtrip with daryl is not successful until we have sang taking back sunday's tell all your friends from beginning to end. the first time i heard the starting line's "make yourself at home" i knew i would use it on a mix cd for my parents the first time i had to leave home for a significant amount of time, and i did. it was the opening song for the cd i made them when i lived in nyc for a summer. rod stewart reminds me of the summers i spent in panama city with pete and gayle because they only played the soft rock station in the house and on the boat. i remember going to my first show alone in atlanta and finding more of my independence, because thats how bad i wanted to see motion city soundtrack - i didnt care if anyone went with me. obviously i could go on and on, but i think you get the point.

while i dont go to as many shows as i used to, i still love going to them. part of me, is jealous of kids today because live music seems to be so much more accessible than it was when i was their age. distance never stopped me though. there is something about the thrill of the unexpected at live shows that just makes me feel alive. the new arrangements of old songs, the covers, the opening acts, the banter, and the crowd all make shows worth the money and distance to me. concerts are one of the last outlets of music that cannot be stolen. sure you could record the show and post it wherever, but the fact is going to a concert is a unique experience for every person there and you cant copy that onto your hard drive. which is what started all of this rambling, a few weeks ago i went to see the where's the band tour. anthony raneri, from bayside, played a few covers in his set. one was quite unexpected. he introduced the song by saying, "this song was probably recorded here in nashville..." curiously, i listened and the song sounded quite familiar but i had no idea how i knew it. well it turned out to be "just to see you smile" by tim mcgraw. the last thing you would expect a punk dude from queens to play, but damn if his version was not great. thats the thing about live shows, they give you the opportunity to find out you love something that you thought was impossible to love. i go to his myspace weekly just to play the video of anthony's "just to make you smile", and that is one song i probably would have gone the rest of my life without singing in my bedroom.

so here you go, anthony raneri's cover of "just to make you smile"
