Dictionary.com Word of the Day: candor: honesty
Taking a vow to never kill again had limited Kenshin's options considerably. As a feared assassin, he'd been able to say exactly what he wanted to say, exactly when he wanted to say it. Now that he sought to avoid fighting whenever possible, he'd had to learn the art of saying exactly what he wanted to say in a way which would get exactly the response he desired -- and if he learned to smile while he lied, it only made the lies all the more convincing.
But when Kamiya Kaoru opened the shoji with her work-worn fingers and stepped out in a new kimono, her long neck arched downwards in modesty, a rare moment of shyness keeping her from lifting her head to ask his opinion indicated by the slight flush running along her cheekbones...
It was at this moment that Kenshin knew there was nothing he could say--candor or dissimulation would be equally deadly.
That moment of silence was all Kaoru needed to rally her courage. She lifted her head and met his gaze with those eyes, "How do I look, Kenshin?"
And the moment hung between them, fragile as spun glass and far more precious. Then Kenshin smiled. "The kimono is very nice, Kaoru-dono, that it is."
She was getting better at hiding the disappointment that flashed in her eyes, and the smile that she gave him was painfully familiar. "Thank you, Kenshin," she said, moving past to hide her face. She hated that smile even on herself. "Shall we go?"
Kenshin said nothing, moving into step behind her pleasantly, carefully keeping any emotion from reflecting in his eyes.
Both were deadly, but candor would have been far worse.
