Ciel's hat, as it happened, rolled right off the roof and into the path of a certain mottled blue-black dragon. Toothless stared, wide-eyed at the article, watched it blow to the side, then looked up to the roof to see who had dropped it. There was a funny-haired, one-eyed human up there, and he had shouted something Toothless didn't understand before he disappeared from view again.

Well, that was interesting. Maybe he wanted his funny flying thing back.

Curious, and ever eager to please, Toothless trotted after the fallen top hat, picking it up gently by the rim in his gums, before moving back to stand just below where Ciel had peered over the edge. He whuffed, curious, and clawed at the side of the buildig. Hey! Look back down here, I think this is yours!

Ciel paused. He could have sworn he saw some odd shadow moving down below him. He'd been ready to write it off, sitting impatiently until someone came to get him out of this pinch, but when something down there started making noise, he hesitantly inched toward the edge, and looked back down.

The... thing looked nothing like anything he'd ever seen before, and the damned thing had his hat. Ciel gripped the edge of the roof, wondering if it would come up after him. No, of course not. If it could, I'm sure it would have by now, he thought.

And if it had his hat, he thought he might just be willing to let the hat go.

Whining softly at Ciel's reappearance over the edge of the roof, Toothless stood on his hind legs and tried to stretch out enough to return the hat. Unfortunately, he was much too small, despite stretching out to nearly seven feet in length, tail not included. He sulked, somewhat, and sat back on his haunches. He knew he would be unable to fly to the roof on his own, and he wasn't aware of Hiccup's current whereabouts in order to borrow the boy to return the lost article.

Pacing for a moment, Toothless aimed for the next best thing. He hurled himself at the building and clawed at it, attempting to run up the side of it. It wasn't terribly effective at first, but once he spread his wings outward and beat them against the air in tandem to his scrabbling, he slowly started to progress up the wall toward the roof.

Of course, he had absolutely no inkling that he was likely terrifying poor Ciel in the process.

If not for his strange appearance, and enormous size, Ciel might have likened the creature's behavior to that of a dog. Still he had, for a moment, felt safer up on the roof where it could not reach him. Now, however, the tables had turned, and Ciel found himself scampering back on the roof, because the thing was coming up after him.

"Stay back!" he warned, brow creased severely.

It took him a good three tries before Toothless actually managed to reach a clawed forefoot over the lip of the roof and find purchase enough to drag himself over the edge and onto the roof, but he managed it. And likely did absolutely nothing to ease Ciel's horror of the situation with the way he hauled himself up, eyes wide and mouth partially agape, retractable teeth popped into place and glinting in the sunlight around the rim of Ciel's very own top hat.

As soon as he was up and no longer in danger of sliding back down to the grass below, however, Toothless dropped his backside onto the shingles and set the hat down, nudging it toward the blue-haired boy with his nose and gurgling. No no no, he was trying to convey. I won't hurt you, I'm just giving this back.

He sat back, then, the hat between them, and watched.

Ciel, however, didn't understand anything except that the shadow monster was coming after him. When the teeth appeared, all it did was cause him to propel further back, knocking loose a shingle and falling harshly on his backside. He winced, stared back at his predator and...

...and realized it had dropped the hat, and was simply sitting, watching him. Once again, he got that inkling to think of this... creature as a dog. He'd... always rather liked dogs, but it was hard to really see the relation except for the poise ( ... )

Looking from the hat to Ciel and back a few times, Toothless nearly rolled his eyes before the boy before him finally began to try and reclaim his hat. He would never understand why, even when he presented himself openly and harmlessly, humans seemed instilled with this horrendous fear of him. It wasn't like he was a Monstrous Nightmare, he wasn't setting himself on fire-- he had even retracted his teeth! But when the boy started his awkward shuck and jive to retrieve his hat via the heel of his boot, the dragon merely tilted his head. You are a silly, silly human, Ciel.

And when he spoke, Toothless had trouble biting back the bark-like laugh that escaped him quietly. He shook his head, two simple motions back and forth. No, Ciel. He wouldn't eat you. Night Furies lived on a rather strict diet of fish, fish, and more fish. There was a reason he never stole sheep from the village.

Somehow, Ciel didn't feel inclined to beleive him. Although... for a beast, this one seemed remarkably intelligent. ...Still didn't answer the question of what it was or where it had come from.

Finally grasping the hat by the brim, he dared to examine it. It didn't seem too damaged... although one side of the brim was now slightly moist, and he grimaced. Stupid thing.

"...You really are a strange thing," he mused, glancing back up at the... closest thing he could think of to describe it was 'dragon', but that didn't even seem right. "Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Toothless frowned when called a thing, but got over it relatively quickly. There were still a lot of humans unaccustomed to dragons being a part of their daily lives. Even a lot of the Vikings were unaccustomed to it.

He nodded at the question, a simple bobbing of his head accompanied by a pawing at the shingles on the roof. Yes, Ciel. He can understand you-- not entirely and not 100%, but he cant understand most of what you will say.

"...Alright then..." Maybe he was being a bit reckless,s but then, he hadn't seen Sebastian yet, and his tardiness was beginning to grate on Ciel's patience and sense of reason. "Can you get me down from here?"

...Was he really asking this thing to get him down? he could hardly believe it himself.

Toothless glanced over his shoulder off the edge of the roof, gauged the distance for a moment, then turned back around to look at Ciel. It would technically require no flight to get from the roof to the ground-- just a swift leap, maybe a little gliding to make the landing softer. He sat primly, and nodded again.

Ciel almost smiled -- it was a subtle expression, that reflected more in a softening of his face than a stretching into any particular expression. Maybe this wouldn't be the day he was attacked by some supernatural being. While his trust in the dragon was beginning to solidify, he did not trust the surface on which he sat. It was a very slow process for Ciel to rise up on his knees, and then onto one knee, as if he intended to stand.

"...Are you saying you want me to climb on?" he asked, when he was within arm's length of Toothless.

Inclining his head in a nod, the dragon bent his forelegs and laid his short neck against the roof, making it easier for Ciel to hoist himself onto the saddle conveniently placed high on the creature's shoulders. He extended his wings to the sides so they were out of the way but Ciel would know to be mindful of them, and trilled. He wasn't sure if Ciel had any rope to tie himself into the harness like Hiccup did, but he didn't intend to actually stay airborn long enough for that to be a problem. Moreover, he knew he probably wouldn't be able to stay airborn long enough for that to be a problem-- without Hiccup's guidance the dragon wasn't very good at flying, anymore. But he could certainly leap from a roof and glide to the earth in order to assist an entirely flightless human.

He had seen the wings before, but now, they were more remarkable -- like a giant bat's. Seeing now, as he had not before, that the dragon wore a saddle of sorts, he felt more at ease. Certainly anything that was tame enough to be saddled, could be trusted.

Or maybe he was crazy.

This time, however, Ciel really did smile. Just a little thing, pulling at the corner of his lips, but a smile none the less. More daring now than before, he pulled himself up, grasping Toothless's neck with one hand, and pulling himself up onto the strange saddle. No, he had no rope, and no inkling that he might NEED such a thing. Surely, he could just hold on tightly... and he did exactly that, lying down against the dragon's back, wrapping his arms around the neck.

Toothless was careful to stay quite still while Ciel got situated-- he knew that moving at the wrong moment could throw the strange blue-haired human off of him, and that could harm both of them. So he waited until there was an even weight on the saddle and Ciel's arms were around his neck, the brief smile not lost on the dragon at all. He shifted carefully, then, slowly straightening to stand on all fours and make a three-point-turn to face the edge of the roof again. He stood there, still for a moment, stretching his wings out fully and testing the air. He didn't want to get caught by a surprise gust of wind and get blown off-course for the ground.

He inched toward the edge of the roof and paused, tilting his head slightly to look over his shoulder at Ciel. He grunted, as though to ask are you ready?

"Just get on with it," Ciel urged, without so much as looking up. If they were about to sail off into the sky, or plunge toward the ground, Ciel didn't much want to see either, and the anticipation was beginning to form a knot in his stomach. As if in reflex, his arms seemed to tighten their hold.
