The afternoon was a hazy time for the pureblood. While most vampires could not be bothered to even leave their beds before late afternoon, Kaname was accustomed to it. His movements were languid and his eyes half-mast as he traveled, but he managed the walk without issue.
He was curious about Naomi Hunter, and the only true way to satisfy that curiosity was to meet her in person. Her invitation was a formality. Eventually, he would have come uninvited, or sent Ichijou.
Reaching his destination, Kaname knocked politely outside the door to her lab, awaiting a response.
Unfortunately, Naomi was not nearly as curious about Kaname as he was about her.
Yes, though most of her encounters had ended negatively, the spark pushing the slender woman towards scientific discovery had continued to keep her interested in vampires and finding out exactly how their bodies really worked. But even that love of science had it's limits, and Naomi doubted that even someone as strong as herself would be able to spend more time than necessary with her guest. Despite the fact that he hadn't even harmed her in comparison to what Adachi had done, she felt more fear for Kaname than she had for anyone else in Somarium.
Naomi was at the door immediately after his knock, leaning casually against the door frame. Though her expression was relaxed and welcoming, the man might notice a slight uneasy in her body language.
Kaname lowered his eyes to regard the Doctor as she leaned into her own doorway, trying to look the picture of ease. She ought to be perfectly comfortable within her own space. To Kaname, the picture wasn't convincing, but the pureblood opted against pointing it out.
He bowed his head slightly in formal greeting. "Doctor," he murmured, offering Naomi a faint smile. It was not a gentle expression. He was not trying to deceive her in the same way she was hoping to fool him. He was dangerous. Even the curve of his mouth said as much, and the way his eyes passed over her only emphasized the point. Still, he was going through the motions of being polite, letting her lead.
Yes, she should be comfortable within the safety of her own warm home, but with everything that had already happened there recently, the woman only felt more cautious with the stranger on her doorstep. Naomi was well aware how silly it was for her to be so on edge considering he wasn't exactly the same Kaname she had the tense relationship with before. And there was also the fact that her 'friend' would be there soon to make sure nothing happened...
Perhaps she really was overreacting.
Gesturing to the room behind her and through the doorway, she moved backwards so that he could join her inside. Whatever unease she held, the doctor was holding it in expertly. Her smile softened easily, helping to give off a much calmer vibe. "Yes, of course. It really isn't a problem."
By her leave, Kaname quietly stepped over the threshold and inside the lab, breathing in a cluster of intriguing scents, the most appealing, of course, being her own. He glanced sidelong at the doctor as she stepped back, moving just past her. Unlike Naomi, he had no issue temporarily standing with his back to her as he perused the interior.
"This is where you work." It didn't sound like a question. Perhaps it was. He was curious to know more about Naomi Hunter. If it began with more information pertaining to her work, just as well.
After speaking, Kaname turned to face the Doctor once more, regarding her through the fall of his dark hair.
Her dark gaze was already on his face the moment he turned back to her and Naomi was nearly taken back with his strange beauty as he looked at her. As a doctor, she'd seen body after body everyday-- ome more attractive than others, some less so. But never had she really been able to accept another human being (or vampire) as beautiful besides herself.
"Yes, that's correct. Though you'll have to excuse how empty it is at the moment." And really, that was the truth. Though the laboratory room itself was stunningly shiny and completely new, the equipment within it was sparse and too few. She had much to reinvest in after the fire.
"That should be taken care of soon, but I only just moved back in. That's why if you peek into my other rooms, you'll see they are much messier than I usually keep it."
"I'm not concerned about your housekeeping, Doctor," Kaname replied evenly, his eyes trained on her face. She is the far more interesting than the sight of her equipment or the ever so faint smell of ash and smoke, masked of course by the new things and fresh air that had been allowed to wash through the space over time.
"I`m glad to hear it." She finally managed to pry her eyes away from him to fix her steady gaze on the wall opposite of him. It was a very nice paint job.
"I have an assistant here everyday, but he works with me on my scientific endeavors, not with anything medical."
"Is there a distinction, Doctor?" Kaname asked, still studying her averted face impassively, fingertips casually dipping into the pocket of his trousers, heel of his hand resting against his hip.
In a slight protective gesture, the woman`s slender arms crossed over her chest, her head tilting away from the man. Despite the action, her smile was much more relaxed than before. This sort of talk usually eased Naomi into a happier state of mind. "It`s slight, but there can be. I`ll admit that much of our work is focused solely on my area of expertise, but there are some projects that I`ve recently taken that don`t involve genetics in the slightest."
"And that is your field?" Kaname asked, his tone still polite, though his questions come without hesitation. They're almost demanding. He doesn't make small talk; there is an intent behind everything he says. And in the silences between, Kaname's eyes don't seem to blink, but rather stare at her with a hungry intensity, devouring every detail.
"Yes, genetics and nanotechnology were my areas of study back in school." It was an innocent enough question to ask, but the gaze he was giving her made her skin burn. Abruptly and with a sudden rush of strength, the woman returned his gaze, her voice sharper than intended. Still, better to be too fierce than to soft.
"What exactly do you want to know? Is there something you need from me, because I fully doubt there`s anything I can do for you."
"I doubt that," Kaname replied, voice still calm and even, eyes still rudely staring back at hers, though they seem a touch amused when she returns that stare.
"You're afraid of me, Doctor. And you've known me, though I can't remember you," the pureblood pointed out, taking a calculating step forward, chin tilted so that he can watch her steadily as he approaches.
"You were of some use to me before, or I wouldn't have known you. And you wouldn't have cause to fear me," Kaname pointed out. It was very simple. Even without a shred of memory of this place or of the people who appeared to recognize him, he wasn't at a total loss for putting the pieces together for himself.
Kaname took another step, inclining his head slightly as he continued to speak, his voice low and pleasant. "I'm curious to know exactly what transpired, and why you thought to hide it from me now."
Naomi was frozen in place as the pureblood advanced upon her, her eyes still focused on his own as he continued to speak calmly. There was no reason for her to even try to deny anything he was proclaiming. It was all so obviously right on mark. She was terrified of him and she had everything to hide. To get on his wrong side again wasn't an option. There was little chance of him just disappearing so conveniently from Somarium soon.
The cornered woman may not move even an inch to the side away from him, but her gaze quickly darted away from his to the clock on her wall. It felt like she'd been standing under his severe look for hours, but time has only slowed down. Javert won't be here for quite some time.
"Why does the past between us even matter to you? All I did was create blood tablets for all of the vampires here. You were interested so you contacted me."
BTW let me know if this is an issue. Passive watching, no worries.chose_deathJuly 18 2010, 03:06:31 UTC
Naomi was right: Javert wasn't due to arrive for at least another fifteen minutes or so. But true to his word, he did station a particular beat officer to keep a close watch on the scientist for the full hour preceding the Inspector's appointment. And then some, really - what Javert hadn't told Naomi Hunter was that he had assigned an officer to look out for certain scoundrels (such as Diva) around her abode. He would not allow a messy repeat of her lab's destruction if he could prevent it, after all

"Hmmm," Kaname hummed in satisfaction, pleased when she started delivering the truth, even if it made her more restless and wary of him. He didn't miss the hopeful glance at the clock, the desperate darting of her eyes, like a cat deliberating which direction to run in, in order to flee its prey. But there was no hope of outrunning him, if it came to that.
For the present, Kaname took his last step and stood still, speaking to her in a smooth voice. "And you were successful? Then I would have been grateful for your service."
The pureblood paused, eyes still focused on her. "But that is not all, is it?" Kaname appeared to breathe in, as if he could taste the truth in her scent. If her pulse skipped, he would know. If her respiration changed, it would excite him.

Small talk had never been her strongest talent.
