Soul shared his partner's sentiment almost exactly. It was one thing to wake up in Death City again with everything back to normal, but this was far from normal. Everything seemed to have an air of silence that no living place should. It was making him feel wary in a way nothing else ever had. It was like the city itself had died.

"I don't know," he replied, "but it's creeping me out."

Could something have gone really wrong while they were asleep? He'd been told the whole dream transpired in one night, but how could they know if that was really true?

"Let's just take a look around first. Maybe we're just missing something here."

Ace didn't share the same vision as Maka and Soul. No, he still saw his Country of Hearts, only it was empty. He had seen the other role holders, except for one: Julius. Of course the meeting hadn't been a friendly one. He still had the blood spattered on his clothing. It made him wish he had his cloak, but it didn't matter now.

There were only faceless nobodies, and not one of them led to the man he was still looking for. Needless to say, his mental state wasn't exactly what one would call "stable", but then again, when had it ever been?

He heard the two before he saw them. Just another pair of faceless beings. He could already see and hear those infernal watches inside their chests, and it only increased his urge to kill.

...But no. Not yet.

"Can I help you?" he asked in his usual cheerful tone, aware of his current condition. Though his red coat could hide some of the blood, it was still rather obvious and he hadn't even bothered to clean his face.

Maka quickly whipped around at the sound of a voice just seconds after Soul suggested looking around-- the first one that was neither hers nor her partner's. She had almost sighed in relief, too, because then it meant there truly was somebody else around.

But then she turned to face him, and it didn't take very long to notice something else was wrong. Blood? Why was that there-- had something worse than Maka imagined occurred?

"Nevermind us," Maka began, in a way assuring him they were fine, and in another trying to divert the attention to him. "Are you okay?"

Things were already looking worse. The first person they'd encountered thus far already appeared to have been in some kind of trouble, and probably not long ago, from the look of the blood. If it was his own, he should have had some kind of obvious injury, but it seemed more likely that the blood had belonged to someone else.

Soul couldn't help but feel that it might be better to let Maka do the talking here, but he did want to cut to the chase. If something was going on, he wanted to know what it was. "What happened to you?"

Normal inhabitants of Death City didn't get into serious brawls, and if they did, they certainly didn't handle the aftermath quite like this...

"Soul, put me down," Maka insisted after what felt like plenty of running from her partner. They were still out in the streets, but fortunately they knew the city more than well enough, so it didn't matter if a random direction had been picked. Besides, she couldn't feel the presence of that swordsman's wavelength anymore; if she concentrated hard enough, she could feel it quite a distance away, and it wasn't coming in their direction.

So for now, they were safe.

"I can walk," she further added. "He isn't close by."

Maka had to be given credit for excellent timing. Soul's arms were starting to give out. Still with great reluctance, he lowered her and allowed the girl to get to her feet. If nothing else, he'd stopped her from bleeding any faster.

"I think we've had enough random chaos already, so hopefully the day's already done its worst." Soul let out a rather impressive sigh. "Anyway, it's probably better that we do something about the blood before anything else magically happens to us."

Maka stepped to the ground, but she didn't let go of Soul's shoulder. With a free hand she grasped at her chest once more; now that she wasn't fighting anymore, it felt like the pain was only intensifying. Regardless, she took a few breaths to finally calm her nerves.

She really had to wonder how she could lose so badly. Wasn't she stronger than this?

"Yeah," Maka agreed anyway with a defeated sigh. "There's still nobody around. We'll be okay."

She wanted to sound like this was a good thing, but still seeing Death City completely deserted was still getting to her. Maka just wanted to see someone-- anyone-- around who would know what to do, and who knew what was going on already.

As much as the all-encompassing silence was creepy, at this particular moment it was somewhat relieving, too. It meant nobody was after them. Even Mr. Crazypants couldn't have eliminated everyone in the city; Soul was confident of that. If Shinigami were here--and he had to be, didn't he?--he would never let any one being wipe out all of Death City.

Wait.

"I just thought of something." Soul frowned slightly. "Even if we can't see anyone, shouldn't we still be able to get in touch with Shinigami? It's not like he can leave."
