Mokona was bouncing around, curious as to why people where acting strangely, when he noticed Subaru.

"Su~ba~ru!" he called, bouncing over to the man.

Subaru cringed. Nobody had called his name quite that way since Hokuto died. But he was in the Sakurazuka estate. He looked up, and around, as if trying to spot the shadowy figure of his dead sister.

"Nee-chan...?"

Mokona blinked, and bounced closer to Subaru.

"Subaru...?"

"Hokuto nee-chan, is that you?"

Subaru looked around blindly, fearful despite his anticipation. He had spent the past decade, asking every wandering ghost that he had met if they had seen his sister. None of them did. The only reason would be that Seishirou had bound her to the sakura, for an eternity of suffering.

Would she hate him then? For loving the man who had done this to her? Despite knowing who he was and what he had done.

Mokona frowned. "Subaru not know Mokona? Mokona down here!"

"I'm sorry."

Subaru buried his face in his palms, tears leaking through the gaps between his fingers. How could he expect her to forgive him, when he could not even forgive himself?

"I'm sorry, Hokuto-chan. I- I can't stop... I tried. God knows I've tried, but..."

Mokona had figured out that Subaru couldn't see him, at least, not as he was. So he bounced softly onto his shoulder, and patted it sympathetically.

Then a dangerous thought came upon Subaru. He looked up slowly, down at his own hands and, with great effort, pressed them together. His fingers were folded in a signal that was almost second nature to him. Vaguely, Subaru wondered if he was making the same mistake that he did when he was nine. Then, he had been saved by his own innocence. That reason no longer stands.

"Don't worry, Hokuto-chan," he murmured, forcing himself to concentrate. "I will set you free."

He had to do it. He had to exorcise the sakura again.

If this had been reality, the sakanagi would knock him flat, considering that he was attempting to purify a magical being that was the composite of over two millennia of blood and souls. And this was assuming that the sakura did not turn on him. But more unfortunately for him, the sakura, Hokuto, even where he was, were all hallucinations.

A powerful spell that could not find its target would be more dangerous when it rebound upon its caster.

"On bata rai ya suwaka..."

Mokona's eyes went wide when he realized what Subaru was trying to do. He knew the consequences of such an action quite well, having seen things in Yuuko's shop when they went against her instructions.

"Subaru, no!"

"On bata rai ya suwaka."

His hands tightened, as Subaru grew more sure of himself, of his chanting. Why should he care if he died from his attempt anyway? Seishirou had already died. By his own hands too. The man who had altered his life for the past sixteen years, gone just like that.

There were no longer anything in the world that would interest him.

Mokona didn't know what to do. Both he and Subaru would be injured greatly if Subaru managed to get this off, and who knew who else might be close enough to get caught. So he did the only thing he could think of. He slapped him across the face.

Alright. That one he did not expect. Subaru felt his face snap to the side by the force. He looked up, and saw nobody around. So he closed his eyes instead to attempt to pick up any supernatural readings.

Finding one on his shoulder, radiating power like a beacon.

"What?"

"Subaru... You need to stop. It's too dangerous here."

Subaru waited. There was no reply, or any other attempts by the spirit to contact him.

And before his eyes, things were degenerating.

"The sakura... is wilting..."

"It's not! It's not here!" Mokona looked down. He didn't know what to do.

"No... don't..." Subaru stood up, stumbling weakly before he found his way out of the apartment building, or the Sakurazuka estate, as he saw it as. The sights of Tokyo greeted him outside, but instead of the glamourous city that he knew, the city was in ruins.

The Final Day had happened.

"Kamui..." he breathed. Oh God. What happened to the boy?

"KAMUI!!"
