Kitchel was standing out by the desert, the chaos of the inner city behind her, staring at the turmoil of the wilderness. Her heart began to quicken as she watched darkened shapes move around in the not-too-far-off distance. She raised her hand against the wind that was throwing up grains of sand and dust into her vision.
"Sand sharks?" Kitchel said, a note of wonder in her voice. "They're past the barrier."
