"My sense of smell isn't as good as some of yours even when transformed." Roland shook his head but changed anyway. Indra turned its head to one side, then the other. He could pick out nothing different on the wind, nothing to help locate their lost comrade.
Nodding, the feminine demon slithered forward to join her companion, her sightless face turning from side to side. The air was calmer than it had been earlier, though the variety of scents in the area was far too overpowering to single out only one. Heat's scent was here, of that she was certain, but it felt faint enough to have been very old.
"He's been here...Though the trail must be at least a few days old..."
"We need the most recent." Gale stood up to his full height, feet planted firmly on the ground this time. He traveled further down the road, away from the desert entrance. Still too many scents. They needed a less-traveled area to be able to catch it.
"The alleys will yield more results than the main streets. Split up, and move towards Espoir as you continue. If you catch a scent that seems recent, report it on the Dreamberry immediately."
Indra wasn't built for tracking, and Roland wasn't sure if he'd even be able to find anything to report. He could only barely pick out an individual scent for Heat to begin with. Still, he nodded and began moving away from the others, hoping they'd have a better time with this than he did.
"Be careful," came Prithivi's short reply before she departed from her comrade's sides, running off towards the opposite direction. Hopefully they would find Heat soon enough.
Gale shifted from the main road to the alleys, searching for Heat's scent. He had to be here somewhere. Heat wouldn't abandon them or close off all contact--not when he was sworn to protect Sera.
Something had befallen the Embryon's second in command. He only hoped they weren't too late.
Roland came back on after some time. "Gale, Argilla, I have tracking help in the form of Abel and his dog. I apologize for getting them involved, but Indra simply isn't built for sniffing people out." Or Roland wasn't built for it. One or the other.
Far from the others, Prithivi returned Roland's call nearly instantly. "I don't mind the extra help at all, Roland. I'm afraid I'm not running into anything recent of Heat's. Is the dog helping at all yet?"
It might have been unsettling enough to watch Vayu's mouth on the Dreamberry. Especially when one considered that there was originally a face where the halves of Vayu's powerful jaws now were. "Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, Roland." For himself, that was being alerted when anyone even breathed, and a good jolt of electricity. "Abel is more than welcome to join our search. The more, the better."
Pulling a plastic bag from his pocket, Roland held it out to show Abel the pillowcase inside. "This is the best I could do. The Embryon have a rather communal sleeping area, but I'm pretty sure Heat used this last. He doesn't exactly have many possessions, so anything I find is likely to have the scent of the others on it as well." He pried the cloth out of the bag carefully with two fingers. "It's at least something."
"Aw hell..." Roland wasn't in bad shape, per se, and the whole being demonized thing had helped, but he hadn't done a whole lot of running since he arrived so this was going to be a nice jolt to his muscles.
He took off after Abel and his dog, keeping up to the best of his ability.
When they stopped, Roland found himself bent over with his hands on his knees. It wasn't too bad, he rationalized, but he was still very much out of breath for the moment.
Once he managed to stand up straight, he took a look around the area. It wasn't any place he knew Heat to visit, but then that was likely why they hadn't found anything until now.
"Should we call the others?" he got out in-between pants.
"I'm sorry. I've got nothing."
