Haku stood about five feet from the fountain, gaping. He'd heard every word.

That had been...unexpected, to say the least.

Before he could stop himself, he'd blurted out, "You...you can't be serious!"

Haku raised an eyebrow in skepticism. "I'll admit that effective leadership is something important in society," he said slowly, "but I've been here for a month and I've gotten along just fine without you ruling me."

He shrugged. "As far as I can see, there's no reason for me to follow you, even if you DID become Overlord."

I am sure you are making a passable life for yourself without guidance, but I propose to improve it! A single figure of leadership whose decisions are followed by all opens so many glorious doors for change, after all.

Haku shrugged. "As long as I can live in peace, it doesn't particularly matter. And, as I recall, our current Overlord allows that."

He smiled apologetically. "Sorry to say it, sir, but there's no reason for me to become your vassal. Besides..."

His eyes became steely as he said this. "...I serve nobody except one man, and he's not here. So, no dice."

Hmph. While I cannot say this pleases me, your loyalty is certainly a shining quality - even I would not go against it.

[He bowed slightly to the other, regretfully.]

Haku's steely gaze melted away, replaced with a smile. "Well," he said, "I wouldn't hold your breath for that. But, if I should, sometime in the future, want your leadership over the Overlord's..."

He bowed low and respectfully.

"...I'll certainly come find you."

[Vyers turned away, his expression somber. Truly, the young man would have been a valuable ally. Perhaps one day he would meet the one who could inspire the boy to such loyalty...]

Haku bowed again, then turned and began to walk away. As he walked, his eyes grew wistful as he wished for the same thing as Vyers.

He wished he could see Zabuza again.

For a long while after that, his mind was awash with the thought of being with Zabuza again. It was what he wanted more than anything.

If only...
