Where was the bright light? He was certain that his eyes had been wide open, the blinding, screeching power of the Kirin striking down on him, to the point when he had felt that he would never be able to see anything beyond that whiteness. Instead, there were greys and heavy clouds in the sky for as far as he could see.
Immediately, he assessed his situation. The pain in his chest was gone, and his vision was no longer fuzzy and dark; the sharp pains in his chest that he knew were broken ribs, the uneven breathing as he choked on the blood filling his lungs, all of it was relieved. His cloak was still around his shoulders, unmarred, when he knew that it had been burned, torn, covered in dust, ash, and dirt.
Sasuke was gone.
Itachi knew he couldn’t be dead. There was no nothingness, no cessation of being. Had it been over, it should have been over. There was no way something as cruel and vindictive as an afterlife could exist.
And no matter the fatal power infused within Sasuke’s lightning beast, it was not strong enough to kill him. Susanoo would have been more than enough to keep him from death.
It’s genjutsu. That was the only logical answer…but how? When had Sasuke had the time to cast a genjutsu on him while in the middle of using such a powerful and nigh-uncontrollable lightning technique like Kirin? Could he have used the blinding light of the technique to distract Itachi while he also cast an illusion over his eyes?
He closed his hands together, eyes closing in the routine of the motions to dispel the illusion, but even before he reopened them he knew that it hadn’t worked. And as he took in a better sight of the strange world around him, he wasn’t sure what it would take to break out of it. He turned around, and could see a floating mammoth in the distance, stone towers and darkened fissures for windows that he could see with eyes that hadn’t seen so clearly since before that fateful night. It was a castle; a palace floating in the sky, the tops of the highest towers hidden by the clouds. Such an elaborate illusion.
You have really grown, Sasuke.
He looked around the small buildings that he stood between, the quaint stone-and-brick structures appearing to be dwellings of some sort, resembling those he had seen in Rock Country during his travels. He walked down the dirt path, wondering why there were so few people moving out in the open, within this illusion-founded world. With such detail to the little village and the behemoth castle in the sky, he almost expected this world to resemble reality a little more closely. Instead, the lack of movement gave it a ghost town atmosphere.
Not as intricate as I first thought.
Although with the detail given to the 'physical' realm of this illusion, perhaps it was too much to expect Sasuke to have the chakra left over to be able to add corporeal beings as well. Would Itachi be left alone here until he could find the key to breaking the genjutsu?
He walked from east to west, taking in the buildings and the farmlands, with their growing crops, while still keeping his eyes open for other 'inhabitants.' He still found no one.
Suddenly, he felt the faint flare of chakra, his eyes moving automatically northwest through the rows of little houses. He knew that chakra as well as he knew his own, if not more so. He changed his course and began to sprint in direction of the flaring energy, the repeated bursts now as obvious as a smoke signal.
I've found you little brother... Let us end this.
