[Well Kotetsu, guess which one of your favourite roommates also happened to be in the park at the moment? Ivan had been seated on a swing near the opposite side of the park -- so he's really not shocked when Kotetsu doesn't notice him. Besides, he's used to being in the background. He merely sits and watches the older man for a moment, swaying slightly in his seat
( ... )
[Kotetsu is snapped out of his reverie by the sound of sand crunching under someone's feet, and he lifts his eyes to see who it might be, and if it might be the daughter he's thinking of. The park had been oddly quiet during his visit, but he didn't exactly take the time to scope out the place. He just... sat down and did his thing. It didn't really matter to him if anyone saw.
So when he sees that familiar face, standing not far off and looking a little unsure as to what he should say, he lifts the hand under his chin and waves. It's not his daughter, but it's still a face he doesn't mind seeing. It's the least he can do to greet the boy, the boy he hadn't taken note of earlier despite him clearly having been there. Oops.]
Hey there, Origami. [He gestures with a half-hearted swipe of his hand for the boy to join him. There are other things to sit on around him, all a little to small for them both, but if the other wants to stand, that's okay too.] How long have you been standing there?
[No, Ivan's definitely not Kaede, (he's not spirited enough to be her, let's be honest) but he cares about the mental state of the older man, regardless. At the greeting, he loosens up a bit, no longer quite as glaringly obvious in his awkwardness. But, being Ivan, it's still there.]
Ah, hello Tiger-san...
[He shuffles his feet, still a bit unsure as to how to approach the situation, when Kotetsu motions for him to join him. He blinks almost comically at that, because the toys are all clearly made for children, certainly not for grown men like the one currently seated on the springy tiger. It's certainly not out of character for the man to act in such a manner at times though, so he cracks a tiny smile at his companion's antics, but continues to stand for the moment being.]
I've only just arrived, really. I suppose we both needed somewhere quiet to think. [He glances down at his feet, kicking the sand around listlessly.] I... I'm sorry if I've interrupted you, though.
[When his fellow hero tells him that he's only just arrived, he sighs quietly, relieved that he at least didn't outright ignore the other. At least, he doesn't think he did. He nods when he just decides to stand, not all that surprised. None of the other toys were as cool as his, after all.]
No, don't worry! You didn't interrupt me.
[He kicks off to launch his seat back and forth and again, back and forth. He gives the other a concerned look, analyzing him with a lifted brow and a tiny, concentrated frown.]
[Yep, that's definitely why he decides to stand, Kotetsu. Those toys just don't match up to the mighty tiger.
Ivan nods in acknowledgment of the man's statement, relieved that he apparently wasn't being too bothersome -- unless he was lying in order to make him feel better, which on second thought isn't likely at all, since it's not in Kotetsu's personality to lie. Period.
He offers the tiniest of smiles and again, a smile at the older man's antics, pleased to have some semblance of normalcy in this world in the form of his housemates. At the look he's shot, the smile drops from his face and he lowers his gaze to the ground once again.]
I'm fine. I've just been... [He pauses, unsure of how to voice his thoughts.] thinking about home a lot lately. [BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT 'TILL IT'S GONE.]
At that answer, he lowers his gaze to the sand and stares at it almost longingly. Being away from his daughter wasn't the only thing throwing him off. He had been a Hero for longer than he could remember. It was all he knew how to do. Even if he did it in his own special, destructive way... it gave him purpose. He was satisfied with that, and happy that he was also keeping a promise he held dear to his heart.
He couldn't really do any of that here. He wasn't a Hero here; he couldn't be an acknowledged Hero, he'd have to become some kind of vigilante. It was something he had considered, fighting crime off to the side on his own, but without a ping from Agnes... he didn't know where to start
( ... )
[He nods firmly at that, lifting his head and allowing his gaze to lock with that of his fellow Hero. Kotetsu always seemed to know what to do... it was a gift.]
You're right. That wouldn't do anyone any good at all, would it? I can't afford to let something like last month happen again! [He turns his head to the side swiftly, grimacing as he recalls the memories. His fists curl up and he's angry at himself for being such a liability once again. He'd thought he was past that point now, the events with Edward opening his eyes to what he was capable of if he tried hard enough.
In the end, it appeared as though he still had a long way to go before he could truly believe in himself -- but he had been making significant progress up until his failed infiltration of Jake Martinez' hideout and subsequent arrival in Somarium. From that point on, it had all just disappeared, leaving him as the shuddering, insecure young hero that hid behind a mask in order to please his sponsors -- and more importantly, hide who he really was
( ... )
[At the mention of what happened last month, he pats the boy on the shoulder in what he hopes is a calming, reassuring gesture. He knows about Ivan's insecurities, and he doesn't want him to feel like it was his own fault. If anything, it was Kotetsu's, his selflessness once again causing a problem that not only put his own life in danger, but the lives of his colleagues.
He lifts the hand that's been balling into a fist at his side to instead place it on the younger's head, ruffling the hair there momentarily before retracting.]
I won't let something like last month happen again. Not to you, not to me, and not to Bunny.
[Normally, when asked about his family (especially his daughter), he'd beam and go off on a little tangent about them. He doesn't want to mention how much he misses them though, how much not being there to call his daughter every night (even if it always ends rather poorly) is bothering him. He doesn't want his colleagues to worry, not about him, since there are more important things for them to worry about, like
( ... )
[The gestures certainly have the desired effect, as they help reassure Ivan considerably -- the ruffling of his hair even eliciting a shy smile. Kotetsu certainly did have a way of making others feel sufficiently comforted with little to no effort. It was difficult not to share in his moods, that was how infectious his personality truly was.]
Neither will I. We may have been rivals back at home, b-but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't work together.
[Even if he was still horribly insecure, his resolve and desire to help others was beginning to make headway -- and a change was occurring, slowly but surely. Perhaps being here wasn't such a completely terrible thing after all.
He's not exactly the best at picking up on subtle emotional cues, and as such doesn't fully take notice of Kotetsu's somewhat forced cheer. Even if he does have an inkling that something isn't quite right with his older colleague, he doesn't make any mention of it. The last thing he wants to do is make things worse.
Instead, he simply smiles and nods.]If they
( ... )
[He gives his fellow hero a wink, pleased with the responses he's eliciting.]
Good attitude, Origami. There's no reason for us to not work together here.
[He seems to brightly shine at the compliment, teeth bared in a more genuine grin, and shoulders tightly drawn together in a prideful stance. He thinks highly of his family, they're the toughest people he knows.
But the genuine nature of his demeanour quickly falters at the question, and he shyly lifts a finger to rub at the side of his nose. He doesn't want to worry his colleague with his own personal thoughts, even though it's a contradictory way of thinking, since he constantly involves himself in the lives of others in the same way.
He can't help the way he thinks, though, and so he quickly tries his hand at a true, but also false response.]
I haven't been to the park in a long time, you know. These - [He points to the toys behind him.] - were always my favourite.
[The turn of the conversation actually seems to be benefiting both of their moods, which causes a tiny smile to tug at the younger hero's lips.]
Yes, even if it doesn't look like there's much work for us to do here...
[That's not to say that he's disappointed by the fact -- he's honestly glad that crime seems to be relatively low here as far as he's seen -- Ivan's merely voicing his thoughts.
He doesn't catch on to the shift, and easily accepts the answer.]
I see. They look like they would be fun... [He catches himself before fumbling on his words a bit awkwardly.] ... f-for a child, of course.
[It's times like these that he sorely wishes that he could be more like Kotetsu. If only he were carefree enough to be able to enjoy simple things like children's toys at the park... He's honestly not sure if part of him resents the older man or if he merely admires him more for it.]
[He shrugs a little at the observation. Ever since things started calming down after that fiasco a month prior, the place had become relatively peaceful. That didn't mean that things couldn't escalate like they had before, and so he wags a finger before the younger Hero's face.]
This isn't a vacation, though. [He scrunches his nose, as if in thought.] It's quiet, but I think it's a little too quiet, you know?
[Oh. If only Ivan knew that this old man isn't as carefree as he lets on. Either way, he finds himself quietly humming at the child bit next, and leans down to eye level. Origami isn't all that shorter than he is, but he feels this method to be the most effective when explaining.]
They are fun, so is everything else here. [He pouts a little.] We can go back on the swings, if you want.
