Attacking the other would be a wasted effort, it would get her no where right now if she were to battle a neutral party, especially one that’s actually taken the time to speak with her about her untimely arrival in this foreign hellhole. For now, she would indulge this man in conversation, and try to figure out information that she didn’t already know, or hadn’t already figured out on her own.

“Unfortunately,” she replied with a tinge of irritation, “and I could’ve gone without that information.” Not literally anyhow, but no one in their right mind would entertain the idea that something abducted them, placed them here, and sealed off all the exits. Whoever accepted that might as well be giving up, in her eyes anyway. To each their own, whatever reason they might have, she didn’t physically have the time to be there; being what one would call a ‘ticking time bomb’ in the flesh.

Her eyes followed the stone that he had kicked, ears carefully listening to that frustrated sigh. “I refuse to believe that I’m stuck here, if there isn’t a way out, then I’ll make one.” A bold claim by someone who hardly spent more than four or five hours there, but in despair there is always a shred of hope for those determined enough to seek it out.

Finally, she regarded the man with a nod in his direction, and folded her arms.

“Who are you, anyway?” She narrowed her eyes a little, she wasn’t about to unsheathe her blade on the other, but that didn’t mean she had to blindly trust his word either. An introduction would ease her worry, if only slightly.

This woman was all business, alright. Jin appreciated that, not being one for idle chatter himself. He wouldn't have time for such things if he were back where he belonged. She seemed determined to break free from this world, even more so than he had been. Trying to leave was a waste of time and energy. Jin took a moment to compose himself, adjusting his stance.

"There are those who are perfectly content being here." He had seen quite a few people like that since arriving, even some who preferred living here. That thought was ridiculous to him; what kind of person is fine with being thrown into some foreign land without so much as a warning? What was more bizarre was the over-accommodating nature of this place. Anything one might need was readily available, as if to conform to the needs of all who wound up here. He couldn't trust a place free from any form of war or turmoil.

"Don't waste your time trying." He'd spent his first few days here trying to do exactly that. Although it was a nice thought, no amount of determination would yield a desirable solution. "Look if you insist. It isn't my concern what you do here." The most he would do was warn her; whether or not she chose to believe him was her own decision.

Jin narrowed his eyes, unsure about answering her question. It wouldn't hurt to tell her his name, would it? After all, she didn't look like the type who'd use that kind of information against him. A long moment passed before he finally spoke.

"Jin Kisaragi." His arms unfolded slowly, extending a careful hand towards her. She seemed respectable enough, although he was taking a gamble by leaving himself open like this. He didn't sense any negative intentions from her, so for now he would have to trust his gut and cast aside his concerns.

A waste of energy or not, she wasn’t about to remove the option, not until it had been exhausted completely, and she had seen so with her own eyes instead of heard of the impossibilities from others. She didn’t have the time for idle chatter, much like he didn’t. She had a goal to reach here, a plan that she had set since her arrival. Find an exit. It was her new priority, created by the numerous other priorities that were gnawing at the back of her head at that moment with uncertainty.

“They can be perfectly content then.” And they could, that was their prerogative, but she wasn’t about to be sucked into a peaceful life here. That would require acceptance, first and foremost. “I haven’t been content for a long time, this place won’t change that.” They could live there for as long as they wanted. She couldn’t live here unless they were all there with her, Serah included, and safe. Wishing for them to be there with her though was selfish, but she couldn’t help it.

“That doesn’t mean I’m willing to give up just yet,” she offered coldly, her voice strong. Trying was never a waste of time or effort, and it would always yield something, if not the desired result. She nodded and tightened her arms, solidified her stance at his comment about her actions not being of his concern. They weren’t, she’d never thought otherwise, but if he felt the need to convey that, so be it. He had every right.

At his introduction, his hesitance noticed but disregarded, she nodded once more. She straightened her posture into that of a respectable figurehead, took the offered hand in her own, and shook firmly. “Lightning,” she responded and then retracted and stepped back. An exchange of names helped lighten the mood normally, but for some reason everyone she came into contact with held some semblance of danger to them, and this Jin Kisaragi felt no different. Then again, she was sure that she felt that way to him as well.

It seemed clear to him that Lightning wasn't the type to just give up, unlike most people he'd encountered during his stay here. Whatever reason she had to scour this world for an escape had to be important. She gave off a distinct aura of determination, although that was already certain based on the way she carried herself. Maybe she'd succeed in finding the way out of this place, but Jin wasn't going to convince himself of that.

"Suit yourself. I won't stop you." It was her business after all. Even if they shared the same desire to get back home, Jin had his own ideas for leaving Somarium. In his mind, including others in those plans would do him little good. He had to look out for himself and no one else if he wanted to survive long enough to meet his goal. However long it took, he would return to his respectful place and finish what he'd set out to do years ago. No matter how much time passed, Jin had a promise to keep.

He gave a solemn nod in response, folding his arms once more, albeit less defensively than before. It didn't do much for him to learn the names of others here, but even so, that knowledge might come in handy some day. There was still a heavy feeling of tension looming in the air, but that was to be expected. Opening up to, well, anyone was something Jin was rarely willing to do. He was a little curious though; why was she so adamant about leaving? It wouldn't hurt to ask. If nothing else, he might learn something useful.

"Even knowing that there is no way out, you refuse to accept it." He pauses for a moment, watching her expression carefully. "Why fight the truth?"

“Why fight the truth?” Lightning snorted, this entire situation turning from ungodly frustrating to mildly, if not dryly, amusing. She was finding it very hard to take her current position seriously, the idea that she’d hit her head and is disillusioned still a pretty decent explanation in her eyes. This was her situation back on Gran Pulse anyway, a few key details and the setting having been the only changes. Trapped back there and supposedly trapped here, not having an exact control over either situation.

She just couldn’t believe her luck, or her uncanny ability in ending up in situations that appeared more hopeless than anything else. “Because this truth is uncertain,” she answered sharply, “no one can verify that there isn’t an exit, and just because it hasn’t been found yet, that doesn’t mean there isn’t one.” And believing otherwise would be adhering to that hopelessness, and she wasn’t about to go back on everything she had told Hope previously.

“I’m not about to sit here and do nothing.” That just isn’t her style, or her way of handling problem situations like this one. That, and she can’t physically afford to at the moment. It was her turn to question him now, because while she seemed adamant to escape this place, he seemed more adamant in telling her that there was nothing she could do. She wanted to know why.

“And what about you? Have you accepted it?”

Jin hadn't accepted it, not by far, but what was he to do? Initially he refused to believe he was stuck in some foreign world leagues away from his own and he searched tirelessly for any method of escape. After days and days of searching, he had found nothing, and with no clues to go off of, he reluctantly backed down and accepted his fate. As discouraging as it was, as much as he wanted to fight back against whatever force was keeping him here, there was nothing to focus those aggressions on. The only fight here was between his will to escape and the constant feeling of helplessness wearing away at him.

"Of course I haven't," he growled under his breath, irritated by the thought alone, "And I never will. But-" But what was he supposed to do? He'd already spent an abysmal amount of time searching to no avail, and his drive to continue doing so was slimming. Jin clenched his fists, shaking his head in annoyance. "I'm running out of places to look." He'd explored every place his feet could take him. "What else am I to do?"

Whenever Jin was close to his goals, something had to get in his way. That had never been much of a problem though- previously he could just destroy whatever happened to oppose him, people included. He was worlds away from his path with nothing left to do but sit around and rot while he grew farther and farther from it. "I have someone to save." He wasn't aware that he'd said that out loud, forgetting everything around him for that quick moment. Soon enough he snapped back to reality and brought his attention to Lightning once more.

"You must have a good reason for doing this," If she insisted on taking action, she must have something important to do. "for ignoring my warnings and choosing to act anyway." That kind of resolve didn't stem from nothing. "What are you fighting for?"

“You don’t run out of places to look until you’ve found what you’re looking for,” she responded a little dryly, because she wasn’t trying to sound inspirational here. Not one bit. Especially not to this guy, who seems fully capable on his own and required none of her encouragement or, for lack of a better term, insistent mothering. She then scoffed quietly at his question. “You keep looking, simple as that.”

Being asked what to fight for though… rendered her silent and her cool, determined state of mind and body faltered, the air she was giving off suddenly much less thick and looming, and much more uncertain. She was fighting to save her sister, to change a fate that she didn’t want and didn’t believe in. That was her main cause, but it had changed drastically since she set upon that goal at first. Now, she felt the need to fight for her new ‘family,’ as they had eagerly begun calling their unruly, misfit group.

“My reasons are my own,” she finally offered, her voice firm yet still quiet and reserved. She shifted on her heel slowly to again turn away from him, and to instead look at the sky behind loose pink bangs. “But I’m fighting for more than just myself, and because of that I can’t afford to be here any long than I have to be.”

And that was only a partial truth. She had to be there to protect them, to make sure they were all right. They were all in this together now, and Lightning was too calculated and precise to leave their fates to mere chance. Much like her current situation. As long as she was here, she was leaving herself victim to chance. Her brand would inevitably advance, and she would soon become nothing more than a monstrous embodiment of eternal suffering and burning, soul-engraving failure.

It seemed futile to continue searching, what could he possibly gain from trying again? Sure, he wanted nothing more than to return home and find his brother, but that also meant being constantly pestered day after day by the police for abandoning his duties. Here he didn't have to worry about being attacked by other officers and random vigilantes; he was free to do as he wished. Even so, he would sacrifice this freedom to find his brother without a second thought if given the option. Perhaps she did have a point.

"Maybe." She could be right, but she could just as easily be wrong. He wasn't sure what to believe at this point in time. Putting his faith in a stranger's ideas would do him no good. Jin lowered his gaze once more to the ground, staring at the reflections in the tips of his boots as he thought. He could think of nothing more to say about the subject, as he had no desire to deter her from what she was set on doing.

Something in her tone seemed to change; only slightly, but it was there. Maybe that question wasn't as empty as he'd thought it was. While he meant nothing by what he'd asked, her reaction was quite different from what he was expecting. When she spoke again, it began to make sense to him. To fight for others; to protect them. It seemed their goals weren't too far off.

"Understandable." It was now, anyway, at least partially if nothing else. "Your reasons aren't selfish." Jin felt he could respect this woman a little more than other individuals whose needs and desires were simply self-centered and egotistical. She was still no different than anyone else on this world in his eyes, but her reasons for wanting to leave spoke volumes about who she was. He had given up on the world long ago, but it was good to know there were still people willing to sacrifice themselves for others. "That much is commendable."
