I'd even take Tom Cruise over Edward Cullen.

So I just finished Twilight. Why, you may ask, would a 20 year old male read such a book as the whimsical female fanfic that is Stephanie Meyer's oddly popular novel? Well a) My field of study is media and the effect it has on today's populous, b) bored as hell, and c) as an old fashioned hopeless romantic, I thought I would atleast get a touching love story out of it.

Well I soon found that out to be as true as Edward Cullen becoming this century's next Nosferatu. Besides the fact that seeing the movie definitely suffices over spending many hours reading what seems like a script with more details, and besides the trite dialogue that made me put down the book on several occasions out of embarrassment, the strongest reason behind detesting this book is actually the way in which the relationship between Edward and Bella works.

Are today's women really into this?

Before you get all worked up and accidently tear your Team Edward shirt, hear me out; The proof is in Meyer's novel. Constantly Bella is being referred to as the prey and Edward as the predator. Edward even tells her that as the predator, everything about him draws her in. In the first half of the novel, Bella won't shut up about Edwards magic powers of persuasion. Granted that the reason behind the inequality in this romantic relationship is due to how dangerous Edward is, it seems simply that Bella is trapped; trapped in that she is drawn to the powers that emanate from Edward.

I mean look at the facts: he commands her around, he is over protective and way overbearing, he straight up eavesdrops on anything he can surrounding Bella, and she find herself unable to leave him do to how lucky she finds herself in this relationship (a result of her very low self-esteem), not to mention the fear behind dumping a freakin' vampire!

It sounds like Meyer spent way too much time on vampire fan forums in her younger years, and as a result has unleashed this junk into our modern culture. Yay for promoting very unhealthy relationships! I'm going back to Steinbeck.

That's the impression I got. Whats your opinion?
