Books make a horrible bed, it seems. Not that Nei'ess remembered going to sleep on books. He sat up slowly, holding his pounding head in both hands.
Even with his eyes closed, Nei'ess could see the room around him. Tattered books were scattered around a room that must have once been a library, but now seemed to be nothing more than an abandoned wreck. A strange red light messed up the colors around him, making him distinctly uncomfortable.
He stood with a sigh, wobbling slightly as the world spun briefly. This place was rather disconcerting to him. He remembered going to sleep after a long day sending messages for the Wolf Pack and then partway through the night, his memory went blank until he had arrived here. That had never happened before. He could remember everything that had happened around him from the time he was born on, waking or sleeping. This gap, this world, the strangeness of it all, it made him feel sick.
He mentally took stock of himself. He wasn't injured and his headache was slowly fading, but there seemed to be some sort of electronic device in his pocket. He pulled it out, opening his eyes and pressing buttons. A communication device of some sort, it had options for writing messages and for voice-activated commands. Nei'ess rolled his eyes at that. Much good that would do a mute person.
With no one to call, on a world not his own, Nei'ess put the journal back in his pocket and tried to figure out what to do next. Was there anyone in this empty red world or was he alone? He sincerely hoped it wasn't the second, because that meant he had no chance of survival. He needed someone to serve if he was going to live.
Well, that was the first line of business then: find people if possible. He closed his eyes, concentrating. It was hard to control his magic when masterless, but it was still the quickest way to find people. He sent a burst of magic out as far as he could, memorizing the colors of the city in one split second. The use of magic and massive sensory overload made him retch, grasping at one of the bookcases for balance.
He had seen at least one person in all that though, sitting by a fountain. Nei'ess started walking there, still rather unsteady on his feet and stumbling his way out of the ruined library.
