Sunlight. Everywhere.
That's the first thing that registered upon waking up on the cold, tile hospital floor. His heart suddenly pounded, and he scrambled to his feet. He was barely aware enough to grab his briefcase before darting into a shadowed corner. He quickly looked himself over. No singing to bare skin, and he didn't feel any weaker than before. This didn't make any sense at all.
He pulled out his cell phone. No service. "Great..." he muttered under his breath. His eyes lingered on the picture of Angeline, his wife, for a moment before he snapped it shut again. He had to get out of this somehow.
He opened his case to check his supplies. Only one pint. That could be a problem. If this place was as deserted as it looked, then this would be a huge problem. Unbidden, his mind narrated the eventual, slow, passage into a hunger-driven madness before he finally died and fell to ash. Nothing but pain for weeks. No sleep during the day. No--
What was that sound? It was a welcome distraction from thoughts he knew shouldn't be coming to him. He looked down at himself. One hand had been tightly gripping the opposite arm. He didn't remember when that happened, but he separated them. He had to keep his head on straight.
Sam stayed out of the rays of the sun, and moved to see what that sound was.
