Instead of working on
help_haiti fic or
kizuna_exchange fic or even that-fic-that-will-remain-epic-only-in-my-head I have been watching Olympics. A lot. Like stumbling home at 8, turning on the tv and watching men of questionable sexuality twirl and jump (with twirls!) until midnight. This is also bad for RL. Good lord is it bad for RL :(
Daisuke Takahashi was wonderful. Evan Lysacek was serviceable. But I really miss 2002 Salt Lake City when it was all about Alexei Yagudin and "
Sex Bomb" Evgeni Plushenko (everybody else can just vie for bronze, thank you very much). Mainly, I miss
Yagudin. That man was a
genius on
ice ♥
Also, talk about drama and daddy issues:
Setting up the stage:
The prodigal son: Alexei Yagudin, obsessive, dramatic, powerful and so insecure in his brilliance that he left his coach, family and homeland rather than share Mishin's time and attention with Plushenko, the up-and-coming star.
The prodigy: Evgeni Plushenko, a mop-haired, hawk-nosed, scarecrow-limber Rod Stewart on ice.
source Alexei Mishin (Yagudin's former and Plushenko's current coach): Coaching them was like having two wives. How do you love them both the same? Alexei maybe thought I gave Evgeni too much love.
Tatiana Tarasova (Yagudin's coach after Mishin): Alexei came to me because he felt Mr. Mishin did not love him and children cannot forget such things.
Plushenko (on Yagudin): I know Yagudin well, and he wants to be the center of attention even when he loses.
(on Yagudin's retirement): He stimulated me to reach towards perfection, and I did the same for him. And when I found out that Yagudin left, it was as though I lost something. You turn around, and there's no one behind you, and no one is in sight ahead. (can I switch over to obsessive Akame fangirl mode here and say that this is what I feel about Akame's relationship most times?)
Yagudin (on this whole soap opera): Plushenko and I are not friends. It's a huge fight at every event. And it's not just us. Our coaches, Tatiana Tarasova and Alexei Mishin, fight against each other, too, using us as weapons. It's really hard mentally to compete against each other all the time...Our rivalry will go on until one of us turns pro. But when the other one turns pro, too, it will start again.
